There is no denying that the Atlanta Braves' current seven game losing streak has been brutal for both the club and their fans. We have all become accustomed to the Braves being awesome all the time and any losing streaks being short and quickly remedied. For some younger fans, this is uncharted, unfamiliar territory, but older Braves fans remember full well that things could be a lot worse than they are right now.
When thinking about this Braves losing streak in the context of the longest losing streaks in Braves' history, it isn't even close. If you want to take a look at true suffering, you need to go back to 1906 and 1977.
What is the Braves longest losing streak in franchise history?
There are some obvious problems with comparing a losing streak in 1906 to one in modern baseball. It just was a completely different game back then and the league itself was so young. As a result, we won't dwell too much on the Boston Beaneaters' 19 game losing streak from May 17 to June 8 that is technically the longest losing streak in Braves franchise history other than to say that they were outscored 107-29 including being shut out nine times.
For a more modern example, we go back to the 1977 Braves who were historically terrible in the annals of franchise history. While the team stunk all season long in route to a 61-101 record, their astonishing 17 game losing streak from April 23 to May 11 is what originally put them in a hole from which they never recovered. Fun fact: Phil Niekro at 38 years old still through 20 complete games that season which is pretty wild.
Now, the Braves' current seven game losing streak could still continue and begin to rival the all-time leaders, but it doesn't seem likely. As of now, it doesn't even rank in the top two longest losing streaks of the 2000's with 2015 (12 games) and 2006 (10 games) currently holding those spots.
In short, at least it could be worse?
