The Atlanta Braves suffered one of the most embarrassing losses of the 2025 season on Thursday afternoon. Atlanta began the ninth inning with a 10-4 lead, but Scott Blewett and Raisel Iglesias allowed Arizona to score seven runs to take an 11-10 victory and leave the Braves wondering how this could have happened.
It was the last thing this team needed before hitting the road but it's been a case of Murphy's Law all season long. Blewett was DFA'd after the game due to his horrific performance. Craig Kimbrel was called up from Triple-A and he may get a shot at closing games with how undependable Iglesias is right now.
Fans were right to boo after this atrocious performance. There's too much talent for this team to be as bad as they are. This is up there with some of the worst losses in franchise history.
In fact, this was the first time the Braves lost a game when leading by at least six runs after eight innings since 1973 against the Mets. They had a streak of 766 games before their loss to Arizona.
Where does this loss rank among others in franchise history? It's pretty high up there but everyone will have a different opinion on the worst losses. Let's check out a few of the most dejecting losses in Braves history.

2019 NLDS Game 5 against the Cardinals
This should come with a trigger warning for Braves fans. I'm sure this loss still sits in the minds of everyone as the toughest loss in recent franchise history. Mike Foltynewicz was only able to complete one-third of an inning for Atlanta and allowed seven runs (six earned).
Max Fried checked into the game and allowed three more runs as the Cardinals shell-shocked Atlanta for ten runs in the first inning of an elimination game. Truist Park was stunned and the Braves offense was only able to score one run in an eventual 13-1 loss.
Braves lose 22-1 against the Orioles in June 1999
John Smoltz faced off with Mike Mussina at Turner Field and it did not go well at all. Smoltz only made it through 2.1 innings and allowed seven runs. Things didn't go much better for the bullpen as they combined for 15 earned runs as the Orioles clobbered the Braves. The offense was only able to muster six hits against Mussina and the Baltimore bullpen.
Cold weather comeback by the Cubs at Wrigley in 2018
Brian Snitker and the Braves have unfortunately experienced a similar fate to Thursday's late-inning loss to the Diamondbacks. Atlanta traveled to Chicago in early April 2018 and the Cubs loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth with a 10-5 deficit. Things spiraled out of control quickly as Braves reliever Jose Ramirez walked five batters to kickstart a nine-run inning for the Cubs.
This wasn't a fun walk down memory lane and it serves as a reminder that you never know what will happen in baseball. Things can change in an instant and unfortunately, the Braves know that all too well. Thursday's loss will likely sit with fans for a very long time.
