There have been a few controversial trades over the years to come back and bite the Atlanta Braves. Some have more weight than others, but that's the nature of trading players. There's always a chance things work out better for one side.
Braves fans are all too familiar with one trade in the 2000s that caused the organization to lose a pitching prospect that would become one of the best in baseball. Atlanta traded for J.D. Drew and sent Jason Marquis, Adam Wainwright, and Ray King to the Cardinals on December 13, 2003.
Marquis and Wainwright were both first-round picks in their respective drafts, so this was a big deal. Drew was incredible for the Braves in 2004 with a .305 average over 145 games. He hit 28 doubles, 31 home runs, and produced career highs in wRC+ (162) and bWAR (8.3).
It was a great short-term move for him, but Drew exited in free agency after the season. Ownership pushed for them to cut payroll, so a long-term deal was always unlikely. On this day over 20 years ago, Drew signed with the Dodgers on a five-year, $55 million contract. Drew opted out of that deal after two years, and finished his career with the Red Sox on a five-year, $70 million contract.
On this day back in 2004, the Braves officially lost JD Drew after paying a huge cost to trade for him
The Braves were massive losers after Wainwright blossomed into one of the best pitchers in baseball. He made his first MLB appearance in 2005, but it was only two innings. In 2006, he pitched 75 innings and showed why this trade was a fatal mistake.
Wainwright went on to pitch 18 spectacular seasons with St. Louis. He had a career 3.53 ERA over 2,668 innings, which included a 3.54 FIP, 736 walks, and 2,202 strikeouts. His incredible curveball earned him the nickname Uncle Charlie, and it helped him get many groundballs. Wainwright ended his career with a near 50% groundball rate.
This is the one trade Braves fans will always see as a failure by ownership. They could have had one of the best pitchers in baseball for almost two decades. Instead, they got one great season out of Drew and heartbreak.
