Atlanta Braves fans aren't strangers to experiencing historic moments. That's to be expected when the organization has been around for so long. From incredible offensive outbursts to incomparable pitching performances, there's plenty to choose from.
Pitching has been the pride of the Braves organization for a long time. This was solidified in the early 90s, and everyone expects Atlanta to carry a talented pitching staff every season. That was no different for the team during the 2010s.
One year in particular stands out as particularly impressive, and that was 2012. The rotation that season consisted of starts from Mike Minor, Tommy Hanson, Tim Hudson, Randall Delgado, Brandon Beachy, Paul Maholm, Jair Jurrjens, and Kris Medlen.
Braves History: Kris Medlen sets longest streak for consecutive wins by a starting pitcher
Medlen ended up having one of the best seasons of his career with a 1.57 ERA over 138 innings pitched. This included 23 walks and 120 strikeouts. Quite the impressive season for a pitcher to have.
However, the most incredible feat by Medlen that season was the historic streak recorded on his final start of the year. On September 30th, 2012, the Braves beat the Mets 6-2 to give them their 23rd straight win in a game started by Medlen.
Medlen was great in this game as he tossed six innings. He allowed one run on three hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. Craig Kimbrel earned his league-leading 42nd save during this game as well.
Medlen's improbable streak began in May 2010, and it's amazing how many times he was able to help Atlanta win in games he started. He missed most of the 2011 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, so that's why it took so long to achieve this feat.
The pitchers in MLB history that Medlen surpassed were Carl Hubbel and Whitey Ford. Medlen was absolutely incredible in his prime with the Braves. He may not be a Hall of Fame pitcher, but he will always be remembered by Braves fans for some incredible pitching performances.
