Since the Atlanta Braves lost both Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin to injuries within a week of each other, the team's catching situation has been rather rough, with both Sandy León and Chadwick Tromp struggling at the plate.
To try and combat this, Atlanta decided to to shake things up at catcher, adding MLB veteran Austin Wynns, who they acquired in a minor league trade, and designating Chadwick Tromp for assignment.
The Braves also announced they had transferred Sean Murphy to the 60-day IL, making his earliest return day July 11. The club also added outfielder DaShawn Keirsey Jr. to the 40-man roster, but optioned him to Gwinnett.

Braves make flurry of minor roster moves
The Braves decision to move on from Tromp isn't necessarily surprising. This season, Tromp has struggled with the bat, slashing just .200/.192/.240, although he did have a standout game with the Nationals where he had two RBIs in extra innings, including a walk-off single. Since his walk-off, however, Tromp has just one hit over the last nine games. The Braves appear to favor Sandy León's catching abilities over Tromp's, although León has somehow managed to be even worse with the bat.
In his place, the Braves added Austin Wynns, who was released by the Athletics shortly after they acquired Jonah Heim from the Braves, and had been playing in AAA for the Los Angeles Angels. While Wynns' 2026 slashline mirrors that of León's, as he has an uninspiring .220 OPS, the 35-year-old had a 129 OPS+ as recently as last season, where he played 40 games for Reds and A's.
The hope is that Wynns can provide a bit more pop than what Tromp was giving the Braves, at least until Drake Baldwin returns. Tromp, despite playing in five consecutive seasons with the Braves, never managed to hit a homer for Atlanta.
Additionally, the Braves added Keirsey Jr. to the 40-man roster and optioned him to Gwinnett. While the move looks odd on paper, especially considering he was already on the Stripers, Keirsey had a pending opt-out. This move allows the Braves to keep him in the organization, and gives Keirsey a slight pay bump.
Murphy being transferred to the 60-day IL is just a procedural move, and doesn't move the timeline on his recovery, but does confirm he'll essentially be out to the All-Star Break.
