In an era where everyone in sports seems to get along almost too well, it is nice to see some competitive fire and have some proper villains. For Atlanta Braves fans, most of their "favorite" players to hate have been on other NL East teams, which certainly makes a lot of sense. So, when Bryce Harper signed a mega-deal with the Phillies, it was a perfect fit in a roundabout way, as it took one of the players Braves fans hate the most and put him on a team Atlanta fans would blink out of existence if they had the power.
Harper's tenure with the Phillies has been a bit of a rollercoaster. After growing from a brash young hitter with an insane amount of hype into one of the best players in baseball with the Nationals, Harper moved on to Philly. He was really good in the first few years of the deal, including winning his second MVP award in 2021, but injuries have been a problem in recent years, and Harper's production did drop off a bit in 2025.
Fast forward to this past offseason, and it is clear that the Harper-Phillies marriage is on the rocks. After general manager Dave Dombrowski heavily implied that Harper may not be elite anymore, Harper took issue with the comments at the start of camp. Everyone is playing nice in public right now, but Braves fans have to be loving the idea that the Phillies are already dealing with some internal discord already.
Braves could get unexpected assist in 2026 if Phillies drama boils over
It is honestly a little odd that things have gotten to this point. Harper has seemed to be very happy in Philly, and while the injuries have sucked, the guy has almost always been one of the Phillies' best hitters, if not one of the better hitters in baseball there. That Dombrowski took an accidental shot at Harper at all was, as Harper said himself, pretty "wild".
At the moment, Harper and the front office are both saying that the sides have communicated about the issue and are moving on. However, Harper still doesn't seem to be over it just yet, and the guy did post a TikTok after the comments of himself wearing a shirt that said "not elite" on it. When a guy the Phillies are paying well over $150 million over the next six years is both angry and potentially declining, it is music to Braves fans' ears.
Unfortunately, we won't know for a while as to how much this dissension will translate on the field. In an ideal world for the Braves, the Phillies' clubhouse becomes a mess and turns against Dombrowski in a public way. That would create a public spectacle that would not only almost certainly be a distraction on the field, but could force the Phillies to consider moving on from Dombrowski. This is especially possible given that Dombrowski has allowed their roster to get old without enough help coming from the minors to compensate.
The more likely outcome is that this is an annoyance at best for the Phillies, and everyone just does what they were going to do either way, but it is fun to dream.
