Success at the trade deadline is all about reading the market correctly and striking at the opportune moment. That can mean holding out to the last possible moment, or it can mean getting deals done when activity is heightened. On Sunday night, the pitching market started moving with purpose after the Cubs traded for Kevin Gausman, and the Atlanta Braves got to work shortly thereafter.
Obviously, the Braves have needed starting pitching basically since the start of the season. Most expected them to come away from this trade deadline with multiple rotation arms if everything went to plan.
Well, they just added one such arm. It was reported relatively late on Sunday night that the Braves were acquiring Tyler Mahle from the Giants in exchange for Anthony Molina.

Atlanta is clearly hoping that they can unlock more out of Mahle that he had shown with San Francisco this season. In 18 starts after signing a one-year deal with the Giants, Mahle has only been able to muster a 5.18 ERA in 94.2 innings of work, although his 4.38 FIP at least brings a little bit of hope. One potential concern with Mahle is injuries, as he had Tommy John in 2023 and dealt with a rotator cuff issue in 2025 and a hamstring injury earlier this season.
As for Molina, he is strictly organizational depth at Triple-A as a swing man. In 18 appearance this season in Gwinnett (including nine starts), Molina has posted a 3.64 ERA with 56 strikeouts and 20 walks in 54.1 innings of work. This deal was about the Giants clearing house and the Braves taking advantage of a buy-low candidate.
We don't know the exact financial terms of this trade, but odds are good that the reason Mahle was so cheap to acquire is that the Braves will probably have to take on his contract. Mahle is currently making $10 million in 2026 on a one-year deal, so Atlanta will likely be on the hook for a prorated portion of that.
