The trade deadline will end in about an hour, and the Atlanta Braves have been rather busy. After fans learned that catcher Joey Bart was traded to the White Sox, another trade came through that no one was expecting.
It was announced that the Braves acquired right-hander Tyler Uberstine from the Red Sox. Backup Braves outfielder Eli White was the return for Boston. While White hasn't been the most extravagant hitter in baseball, he was well-beloved in Atlanta. He provided some exciting moments over the years and was a great pinch-runner/defensive replacement late in games.

White has a .233 average, six doubles, five home runs, 17 RBI, and a .691 OPS over 69 games played. He was hitting really well with a .304 average over his last 23 at-bats, with seven hits (two of them being home runs).
While it's a bit of a shock to trade away bench depth that provides great defensive and base-running skills, Atlanta's acquisition of Lane Thomas made his presence redundant. The return being a minor league reliever who has only seen two MLB innings in 2026 is interesting. Uberstine was listed as Boston's 14th-best prospect and has spent most of the year at Triple-A.
Uberstine could be a good long relief option for the Braves. The righty has a 2.81 ERA over 32 innings, with 11 walks and 37 strikeouts. Uberstine isn't going to overpower anyone, as his fastball tops out at 96 mph. However, it seems his heater has some nice carry to it.
He features some decent offspeed and breaking pitches to keep hitters off the fastball. This includes: a mid-80s changeup, a low-80s slider, and an upper-80s cutter. Uberstine also has an unconventional delivery that helps him be a bit deceptive.
This could simply be a depth move, or he could find his way into the Braves bullpen at some point. Losing White is bizarre, but it's also understandable why the Braves moved him.
