Atlanta Braves 2022 Season Review: Vaughn Grissom
The Atlanta Braves experienced a great deal of success from their rookies in 2022. Spencer Strider and Michael Harris II each have a strong case to win Rookie of the Year in the NL. Both players stepped up when the team desperately needed them. That narrative was almost exactly the same when it came to Braves infield prospect, Vaughn Grissom.
Injuries to both Ozzie Albies and Orlando Arcia prompted the Atlanta front office to promote Vaughn from Double-A Mississippi. While he didn’t possess the gaudy tools that Strider and Harris possess, he impressed in the minor leagues with his ability to get on base and put the ball in play, so the Braves decided to give him a shot once the opening at second base became more of a long-term vacancy.
What did Grissom do in his first Major League game? Well, he launched an absolute moon shot over the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston. No big deal.
How did the 2022 season go for Vaughn Grissom?
The 2022 season started with a bang for the 21-year-old Orlando, FL native. Grissom slashed .321/.368/.509 with five homers and five stolen bases through the first 29 games of his MLB career. However, after those 29 games, his offense declined a decent bit.
From September 12th to October 5th, Grissom carried a .200/.310/.229 slash line with a .538 OPS. That decline was to be expected as pitchers adjusted to his approach at the plate. There was talk of moving Grissom to left field once Ozzie Albies returned from the IL. Unfortunately, that was short-lived as Albies fractured a pinky sliding into second base.
Overall, it was an impressive debut for Grissom as his first taste of Major League action ended with a line of .291/.353/.440 and a .792 OPS. He also showed that he carries a decent amount of range and made some nice plays at second base.
What can the Atlanta Braves expect from Vaughn Grissom in 2023?
It’s unclear what Grissom’s role will be going forward as the Atlanta Braves expect Ozzie Albies to return in 2023. The uncertainty around Dansby Swanson returning does allow the opportunity for Atlanta to consider using Grissom as their primary shortstop going forward, although scouts differ on whether shortstop is the ideal defensive home for Grissom.
There is also the question mark surrounding left field and getting a suitable player in that role. The Braves had considered using Grissom at that position during the 2022 season however, his lack of experience as an outfielder could prove difficult.
The most realistic expectation fans can have for Grissom is a utility role off the bench or, arguably more likely, that he will begin the 2023 season in the minor leagues. If they are unable to sign Swanson or another suitable replacement at shortstop, it’s fair to assume the Braves will consider letting Grissom take over the position. However, with the importance of shortstop as a premium position on a contending team, the Braves will almost certainly try to get a proven SS elsewhere before entertaining Grissom at short too much.
The future is bright for Vaughn Grissom and with the proper adjustments, he could be a valuable piece for this Atlanta team going forward. Fans have already witnessed the best Grissom has to offer and he is a viable option for the Braves no matter how they choose to use his talents going forward.
