With the Atlanta Braves looking at another potential heart-breaking defeat, here comes Ronald Acuña Jr. to the rescue.
With the designated hitter rule going into affect league-wide, there haven’t been many opportunities for pinch-hit heroics for the Atlanta Braves in 2022.
But that all changes when you happen have a weapon like Ronald Acuña Jr. on the bench in a one-run game.
The Atlanta Braves had finally gotten to Miami Marlins starter Trevor Rogers who had retired the first 12 batters of the night before Austin Riley led off the 5th inning with a solo blast.
They’d score two more in the inning and it looked like they might cruise to a win with the way Ian Anderson was pitching.
But the Marlins had different plans as they spoiled the fun with a pair of 2-run homers in the sixth to take the lead.
Matt Olson, who didn’t have his best night making an error and striking out three times, began the bottom of the seventh with a walk.
Contreras followed with a tough-luck lineup, and then Adam Duvall did what he does best — strikeout.
That’s when the moment happened…
Brian Snitker summoned the best player in all of baseball off the bench looking for some two-out magic.
And with two strikes, Acuña delivered.
And let’s not forget the bat flip…
Let’s be real though, the magic of this play is that Matt Olson somehow scored from first base.
Dansby Swanson had some great base running in the inning as well scoring from first on a bloop hit to left by Ozzie Albies giving the Braves a two-run cushion.
What an incredible moment for Acuna coming off the bench and delivering in a big spot in from of a sellout crowd at Truist Park.
Hopefully this is the type of win that can spark a big winning streak for the Braves.
It won’t come easy as they’ll face Sandy Alcantara on Saturday and hush 2.11 ERA and 1.07 WHIP.
