While some of the Atlanta Braves Top 30 prospects have garnered most of the attention throughout the 2021 minor league season, there is a former top prospect whose season should not go unnoticed.
The Atlanta Braves have a wealth of young starting pitching depth throughout the major and minor leagues, many of which are making an impact at the big league level this season.
With only five spots available in the rotation at the big league level, there are obviously some younger arms that have-to remain in Triple-A, despite being major league ready right now.
While pitchers such as Ian Anderson, Huascar Ynoa, Touki Toussaint, and more have made an impact in the big leagues this season, there is also one former top prospect who has spent almost all of the 2021 season in Triple-A Gwinnett β Kyle Wright.
Despite pitching in Triple-A, the 2021 season has been an impressive one throughout for the 25-year-old right-hander.
Atlanta Braves pitcher Kyle Wright has had an impressive season in Triple-A.
The Braves former first round pick (No. 5 overall) in the 2017 MLB Draft out of Vanderbilt, Wright entered the 2021 season having posted a 6.22 career ERA in the big leagues across 19 appearances, 12 of which were starts.
While Wright struggled during his two appearances in the big leagues this season, what the right-hander has done this season in Triple-A should not go unnoticed.
Making 22 starts so far this season in Gwinnett, Wright has posted a 9-5 record with a 3.34 ERA across 124 innings pitched. Across that span, Wright has also struck out 123 batters to 41 walks, as well as an 8.9 K/9.
Likely making at-least one more start this season, Wright has the chance to put the finishing touches on what has been an impressive 2021 campaign sometime over the next week.
Looking ahead to the 2022 season, is it possible that we could see Wright back in Atlanta on a full-time basis? While itβs unknown if a spot in the rotation will be open for the 25-year-old right-hander, could the former first round pick play a role in the Braves bullpen next season?
