Ranking Atlanta Braves All-Star Squads Since 2010
We rank the last 11 Atlanta Braves All-Star groups in order of a subjective calculation of awesomeness.
Despite a sub-.500 season thus far, the Atlanta Braves are sending three players to the All-Star game. It always gives me hope to see the Braves well represented at the Mid-Summer Classic.
Today, we will rank the All-Star squads the Braves have put together since the 2010 season. I ranked them based on objective awesomeness.

11. 2015 Atlanta Braves All-Stars: Shelby Miller
In 2015, Braves fans did not have a lot to root for. Expectations were not high as the Braves followed up a 96-win 2013 with a disappointing 79-83 injury-ravaged season. General Manager Frank Wren was terminated mid-season.
The young core we thought we had in 2013 was mostly traded away, leaving Freddie Freeman, Andrelton Simmons, and a few scraps. Jace Peterson, Alberto Callaspo, Kelly Johnson, and Eric Young were Opening Day starters for the 2015 Braves while Evan Gattis, Craig Kimbrel, Both Uptons, Dan Uggla, and Jason Heyward were all gone.
That offseason, the Braves signed Nick Markakis to a four-year deal and acquired Shelby Miller in a deal with the Cardinals that sent Heyward to the Red Birds. For Braves fans, it was yet another dagger. Just a few short years after Heyward and all of his hype burst into the major leagues, he was gone.
Shelby Miller was the part of the deal that could provide the Braves with some major league pitching in 2015 and beyond. The 24-year-old hurler came to the Braves with a 26-18 record and a 3.33 ERA.
Miller gave Braves fans something to root for in 2015. He finished the first half of the season with a 2.38 ERA while opposing hitters were batting just .209 against him.
His stellar first half also included a May 17th outing against the Marlins that fell one out shy of a no-hitter (thanks a lot, Justin Bour!).

Ultimately, Miller finished the season with a spectacular 3.02 ERA and earned the only All-Star nod of his career. While the Braves were struggling, Miller looked to be more than a solid starting pitching piece, but a true ace for 2015 and beyond.
Of course, the Braves ended up dealing him to the Diamondbacks in a very lopsided trade that brought Ender Inciarte and prospects Dansby Swanson and Aaron Blair.
Despite leading the league in losses with a 6-17 record, 2015 was Miller’s best season. It was the only season he exceeded 200 innings pitched and the 3.02 ERA was his best.
In the years since, Miller has only pitched 185 innings and struggled to a 7.15 ERA as injuries have taken their toll.
All-Star Credentials: Miller found himself among league leaders with a 2.38 ERA and .227 BAA. He had two shutouts entering the break and posted a 0.95 ERA in May.

10. 2016 Atlanta Braves All-Stars: Julio Teheran
Julio Teheran will always be one of my favorite Braves. He came in with a great amount of hype and he lived up to it for years. It always felt like he was overachieving.
In 2016, his average fastball was usually riding around 88-91 MPH (which used to be average). As his fastball continued to slow, he continued to make changes and keep hitters off balance.
Teheran surpassed the great Greg Maddux in 2019 with his sixth straight Opening Day start, tying him with Warren Spahn.
2016 was his second and last (as of now) All-Star selection. Julio also made the squad in 2014 as a 23-year-old.
In 2016 Teheran led a rebuilding Braves team into the All-Star break with a 2.96 ERA and 107 strikeouts in 118.2 innings pitched.
Like Shelby Miller on the last page, Teheran’s performance was not picked up by the Braves bats as he entered the break with a 3-8 record.
Manager Brian Snitker (who replaced Fredi Gonzalez in the first half of 2016) had this to say about Teheran’s second All-Star nod (via MLB.com).
“The record’s not how this guy — this guy’s been awesome. Very effective. He’s kept us in every game — just been nails. He’s been really good, very deserving of this honor. I’m happy for him. Like I said, it’s well deserved. You look at his numbers other than his record, he’s as good as anybody in the league.”
Teheran finished the 2016 season with a 3.21 ERA in 188.0 innings pitched. His 7-10 record was reflective of a poor offense as the Braves continued their rebuild. However, we knew that once every five days we were going to be treated to a gutsy, gritty performance by our lone All-Star of 2016.

9. 2017 Atlanta Braves All-Stars: Ender Inciarte
Ender Inciarte came to the Braves prior to 2016 when they traded Shelby Miller after one successful season in Atlanta. The Braves were rebuilding and decided to capitalize on Miller’s dominant 2015 season. They struck a deal with the Diamondbacks and received former number-one overall pick Dansby Swanson, top pitching prospect Aaron Blair, and an everyday player in Ender Inciarte.
Ender immediately made an impact on the Braves in 2016 and continued rolling in 2017. The moment he donned a Braves uniform he became a Gold Glove centerfielder, winning three consecutive awards between 2016-2018. He finished the 2017 season with a .304 average and a .350 on-base percentage.
He also contributed a little pop with 11 homers and 27 doubles to go with his five triples and 22 stolen bases.
A true contact hitter, he finished 2017 2nd in the NL in singles. He finished second in plate appearances, first in at-bats, and 10th in games played.
To date, this remains Ender’s only All-Star appearance. Here’s what Ender told MLB.com about the experience.
“Just everything about the game,” Inciarte said. “Once you heard the national anthem and you realize that you are standing in line with all those guys, it is really special. I am happy with today and hopefully, I can repeat it again.”
The re-build was almost complete as the next season would mark the beginning of an NL-East title streak. Ender’s play had cemented him as an everyday centerfielder for the next few years.

8. Atlanta Braves 2014 All-Stars: Craig Kimbrel, Freddie Freeman, Julio Teheran
By the 2014 All-Star break, the Atlanta Braves were coming off of a 96-win season with a young core in place. They were 52-43 and tied for first as they took a break to celebrate the game of baseball.
While there isn’t a lot we want to celebrate about the second half of 2014 (including the beginning of an eight-game losing streak later in July) we can celebrate the stars who earned All-Star selections for the Braves.
Atlanta Braves 2014 All-Star: Craig Kimbrel
Craig Kimbrel entered the break leading the league in saves. At just 27-years-old, this was his fourth major league season and his fourth All-Star selection. Boy, he sure was fun to watch in a Braves uniform.
Kimbrel finished the 2014 campaign with a minuscule 1.61 ERA and a league-leading 47 saves. He had broken John Smoltz’s franchise saves record of 155 earlier in the season… not bad for a 33rd round draft pick.
Kimbrel entered the game in the seventh inning and struck out the side.

2014 All-Star: Freddie Freeman
The same year Freddie Freeman signed his eight-year $135-million deal, he earned his second consecutive All-Star nod.
Freeman finished the 2014 campaign as the Braves leader in OPS and batting average.
He finished the season with a .288/.386/.461 triple slash line. Freeman crushed 18 homers and a whopping 43 doubles.

2014 All-Star: Julio Teheran
While some experience a sophomore slump in their second year, Julio Teheran continued to build on his strong rookie campaign with his first All-Star nod.
Teheran was quickly establishing himself as the young ace of the Braves staff.
MLB.com pointed out that of NL Pitchers with at least 40 starts since 2013, only Clayton Kershaw, Adam Wainwright, and Zack Greinke had lower ERAs than Julio Teheran’s.

7. Atlanta Braves 2019 All-Stars: Mike Soroka, Freddie Freeman, Ronald Acuña Jr.
The Braves sent a veteran and a couple of youngsters to represent the team in the ever-exciting 2019 season.
Atlanta Braves 2019 All-Star: Ronald Acuña Jr.
Atlanta was coming off of an NL East Championship and Ronald Acuña Jr. burst onto the scene, winning the NL-Rookie of the Year Award and even finishing 12th in MVP voting, despite only playing in 111 games in 2018. Then, who can forget his epic NLDS grand slam off of Walker Beuhler?
Ronald went on to flirt with a 40/40 season, finishing just three steals shy of the mark in 2019. Acuna was selected as the starting center fielder and the number nine hitter for the Senior Circuit.

2019 All-Star: Mike Soroka
Mike Soroka was in the midst of his campaign to win the 2019 Rookie of the Year Award and on his way to a phenomenal 2.68 ERA over 29 starts.

2019 All-Star: Freddie Freeman
Freeman was selected to his fourth All-Star Game in 2019. He was on his way to another stellar season. He finished eighth in MVP voting and won his first Silver Slugger Award. He finished the season with a .295/.389/.549 triple slash. He smashed 34 doubles, 38 homers, 121 RBI, and scored 113 runs.
Freeman earned a starting nod and found himself hitting third for the National League. He had a memorable first at-bat against Verlander in which Freddie was mic’d up live on FOX.

6. Atlanta Braves 2013 All-Stars: Craig Kimbrel, Brian McCann, Freddie Freeman
This was the first season following the Chipper Jones era. The young Braves were led by their young first baseman as they marched to a 96-win NL East title.

Freeman entered the break hitting .308 with nine homers and 61 RBI. He earned the final vote in a fan vote to make the squad, setting a record with 19.7 million votes. Freeman went on to continue serving as the heart of the lineup, a hugging machine, and a major piece in the Braves’ 96-win season.
This was young Freddie’s very first All-Star selection. Alas, he was unable to play due to a jammed thumb.
He finished the season with a .319/.396/.501 triple slash with 27 doubles and 23 home runs to go with 109 RBI and 89 runs scored.

2013 All-Star: Brian McCann
Once it was announced that Freeman needed to sit out the ASG due to his thumb, the NL had to add a replacement player. They turned to teammate Brian McCann.
This was McCann’s seventh and final All-Star game.
At the break, McCann had a stunning .910 OPS with 12 HRs and 32 RBI.
A wonderful accomplishment considering he was coming off of off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The injury caused McCann to hit just .202 in the final two months of the 2012 season. He was even benched in the NL Wild Card game in favor of David Ross.
Due to his recovery from the surgery, McCann missed over a month of the 2013 season, opening the door for Evan Gattis to establish himself. Even with all of those things considered, McCann played his way to his seventh All-Star squad.

2013 All-Star: Craig Kimbrel
In just his third full season, Kimbrel was named to his third consecutive All-Star Game. He was a part was one of only three relievers to make the NL squad.
The triumvirate consisted of Jason Grilli, Aroldis Chapman, and Kimbrel. They combined for over 70 saves at the break. Kimbrel led the way with a 1.53 ERA.
Craig was in year three of a four-year run in which he led the league in saves.

5. Atlanta Braves 2021 All-Stars: Ronald Acuña Jr., Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies
This year’s edition of the Atlanta Braves All-Stars features the three offensive rocks for the Braves. These three stars have kept the Braves around .500. Let’s face it, the rest of the lineup after the top three is not what we hoped to see.
These three guys have been unbelievable in keeping the Braves in contention.
2021 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Ronald Acuña Jr.
As of this writing – the morning of Saturday, July 10th – RAJ is tied for third in all of baseball in fWAR with 3.9. He is third in the NL with 24 homers. He’s fourth in the NL in steals with 16. He is sixth in walk percentage and second in slugging.
Acuña is having another truly spectacular season. His starting nod is well-deserved. Where would we be without him? Unfortunately, we’re soon to find out.
2021 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Freddie Freeman
After a slow start (by Freddie’s standards) he has bounced back in a big way to earn this starting selection. Freeman’s 14.5% walk rate is good for fourth-best in the National League. Freeman is 10th in the NL with 18 home runs.
This is number 5’s fifth All-Star appearance. Hopefully, it won’t be his last with the Braves.
2021 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Ozzie Albies
Where would we be without the other two? Perhaps the most important player to ask that question about is our second baseman. With Marcell Ozuna getting arrested and Travis d’Arnaud suffering his injury, the Braves were left with two massive holes in the lineup.
After being moved down in the lineup earlier in the year, Ozzie Albies was forced into the three-hole to hit behind Freeman. Since Ozuna’s arrest, Albies leads all number three hitters in RBI with 34 (two more than Vlad Guerrero Jr.). He is second in doubles, just two behind doubles-machine Nicholas Castellanos. He is slashing .304/.354/.534 in that time.
4. Atlanta Braves 2018 All-Stars: Freddie Freeman, Ozzie Albies, Nick Markakis, Mike Foltynewicz
The 2018 All-Star game brought a lot of hope to the Braves. The team was just a half-season removed from finishing 25 games out of first place. The unlikely turnaround led to the first of three straight division titles and counting.
The team had an injection of premium youth with Albies arriving in 2017 and Ronald Acuna Jr. had arrived just 43 games prior to the 2018 All-Star break.
Two veterans in Markakis and Freeman helped lead this team out of the gutter and an injection of youth adding to the firepower with Albies and Folty.
2018 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Freddie Freeman
Freeman entered the break hitting .315 with 16 homers, 61 RBI, 25 2B, 59 R, and a .533 SLG. Freddie had completely established himself as a true star of the game at this point, as evidenced by the fact that he led the NL in votes with over four million.

2018 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Ozzie Albies
Albies found himself representing the Braves on the National League All-Star squad at just 21-years-old.
Ozzie posted an .810 OPS over the course of his 57 games in 2017 and continued to build off that success into 2018.
He lit the month of April on fire with nine homers and a 158 wRC+. Ozzie posted a ridiculous 20 homers and 55 RBI by the break. He had also scored 74 runs and racked up 29 doubles and nine steals.

2018 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Mike Foltynewicz
In what was a breakout season for Folty, he provided more than stability to the pitching staff, but ace-like numbers.
He finished the year with a 2.85 ERA in 31 starts and a 13-10 record.
To date, this is his only season to finish with an ERA under 4.31.
Folty had a solid outing in the All-Star game, striking out Jose Ramirez, walking Aaron Judge, then getting Manny Machado and Jose Abreau to fly out to end the fourth.

2018 Atlanta Braves All-Star: Nick Markakis
It is hard for me to fathom that Nick Markakis is a one-time All-Star. What can I say? Chicks dig the long ball.

Nonetheless, Markakis had the long ball working for him in the first half of 2018. He started the season with an EPIC BANG against the Phillies with this walk-off home run.
At the break, he had 10 long balls with 61 RBI. He was hitting .323 with an .877 OPS. He was selected as the NL’s starting right fielder.

3. Atlanta Braves 2012 All-Stars: Chipper Jones, Craig Kimbrel, Dan Uggla, Michael Bourn
We know 2012 as Chipper Jones’ final season, ending in the wild NL Wild Card game against the Cardinals. However, the Braves were packing some firepower in 2012.

In a farewell to one of the greatest Atlanta Braves of all time, Chipper made the All-Star game as a reserve.
This was Chipper’s eighth and final appearance.
Chipper had only logged 197 PAs prior to the break, but he made the most of his opportunities.

Atlanta Braves 2012 All-Star: Craig Kimbrel
Kimbrel had earned his second All-Star selection in just his second full season. The reigning NL Rookie of the Year went on to lead the NL saves for a second straight season in 2012. He finished up the 2012 season with an insane 1.01 ERA in 62.2 innings, racking up 116 SOs.
Kimbrel entered the game in the bottom of the eighth down 0-8. He struck out Asdrubal Cabrera and Ian Kinsler before being replaced by Aroldis Chapman.

Atlanta Braves 2012 All-Star: Dan Uggla
This was Dan Uggla‘s third and final All-Star appearance. He had established himself as one of the league’s premier power-hitting second basement between 2006-2011, but that began to fade in 2012.
Despite leading the league in walks with 94, he broke a personal streak of five straight seasons with 30+ homers and six straight with 27 or more. Uggla finished 2012 with just 19 homers and a .220 average, setting the stage for his precipitous drop in production in 2013 with a .179 average.

Atlanta Braves 2012 All-Star: Michael Bourn
At age 29, this was Bourn’s second and final All-Star game. He finished the season with 42 steals after coming off of a 61 steal performance in 2011.
The speedster got on base with a .348 clip, racked up 57 RBI, 26 2B, and a whopping 10 triples.

This is one of two groups to have five players from the Atlanta Braves represent the team in the All-Star game. I ranked this one second because the other one has Chipper Jones, period.
Atlanta Braves 2010 All-Star: Martin Prado
Martin Prado, the consummate professional, was elected as the starting second baseman. He hit second behind Hanley Ramirez and in front of Albert Pujols. Prado went 0-3 during the game.

Atlanta Braves 2010 All-Star: Brian McCann
This was McCann’s fifth straight All-Star selection. B-Mac took home the All-Star MVP honors with this hit.

Atlanta Braves 2010 All-Star: Omar Infante
This was Infante’s lone All-Star appearance in his 15-year MLB career. He finished with a stellar .321 average for the season. The Braves would turn his success into Dan Uggla the following off-season.

Atlanta Braves 2010 All-Star: Jason Heyward
2010 was a magical season for Heyward and the Braves. He finished second in Rookie of the Year voting and made his first and (thus far) only All-Star appearance.

Atlanta Braves 2010 All-Star: Tim Hudson
Tim Hudson is one of my all-time favorite Atlanta Braves. He was gritty and tough, if he gave up a couple of early runs, you still had confidence that he would find a way to battle deep into a game and give the team a chance to win.
The former 20-game winner would earn his third of four career All-Star appearances and his first selection since the year 2004.
Hudson finished his sixth season in Atlanta with a 17-9 record and a 2.83 ERA.

This game represented the end of his six straight All-Star games, although he did appear again in 2013. B-Mac started this game and hit fifth for the elder league.

Atlanta Braves 2011 All-Star: Jair Jurrjens
Although 2011 was Jurrjens only All-Star selection, 2009 ended up being his best season. But oh, what a first half he had in 2011 for the Braves.
Jurrjens pitched 1.2 innings in the All-Star Game and handed the ball off to teammate Craig Kimbrel to finish the seventh inning.

Atlanta Braves 2011 All-Star: Johnny Venters
Johnny Venters was traditionally used as Kimbrel’s setup man during the season, creating a dynamic 1-2 punch in the backend of the Braves bullpen, but in the 2011 ASG Venters relieved Kimbrel, who relieved Jurrjens.

Atlanta Braves 2011 All-Star: Chipper Jones
This season served as Chipper’s seventh of eight All-Star appearances. Chipper finished the season with 33 doubles and 18 homers in just 126 games at 39 years of age.
