It was a wonderful night of baseball on Tuesday for the Atlanta Braves who played their best game of the year in a 5-0 win over the Chicago Cubs.
After one of the most embarrassing days I can remember as an Atlanta Braves fan on Sunday losing a double-header to the Arizona Diamondbacks with only 1 hit on the day, they come back two days later and play their best game of the season.
The Braves had everything going on Tuesday led by their young stud on the mound in Ian Anderson who was in complete control the entire evening.
He allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk over 7 innings with 8 strikeouts against a Cubs offense that has been really good the past few weeks.
Anderson finished the night at 90 pitches and probably could have gone the distance as he was that dominant and it looked effortless.
A.J. Minter and Jacob Webb came on and in relief and recorded 5 strikeouts in 2 innings while allowing just 1 baserunner.
It was pretty easily the best pitching performance of the year for the Braves.
And the offense was really good as well with just about everyone hitting.
Ronald Acuna Jr. had a hit and a walk, including that 481-foot blast to get the scoring started.
Freddie Freeman got on base three times. Ozzie Albies had a couple of hits and Dansby Swanson had a 3-hit game.
Marcell Ozuna and Austin Riley each picked up a hit in this game. Of course, a Braves win wouldn’t be complete without a pinch-hit RBI single from the great Pablo Sandoval.
If I have to call out one negative, it’s that the team struck out 13 times. But six of those came from the eight and nine spots in the order. And both of Acuna’s strikeouts were on questionable calls.
All around this was just a very well-played game by the Braves and a breath of fresh air. It seems like every other win they’ve had this season was such a struggle.
It was nice to finally have one game where they just dominated and the outcome was never in question once they took the lead. We’ll take more of that, please.
