Just how good is he?

As I said earlier, I think it’s kind of an easy call for the Atlanta Braves to name Will Smith as the team’s closer. I would also expect Smith to easily eclipse 30 to 35 saves for the team assuming they will be healthy and win a lot of games as they should.

Again, I could envision a scenario where the Braves elect to use Smith in an 8th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies or Washington Nationals if say Bryce Harper or Juan Soto is due up at the plate.

An ERA under 3 for the season would be ideal as well, but somewhere a tad north of that might be a bit more reasonable as well.

Obviously, it’s yet to be seen if the home run epidemic around the entire game will be the same in 2020, but if it is, the good news for Will Smith is the fact that he allows a low amount of base runners. That home run is usually in the solo category.

All in all, signing Will Smith probably gives the Atlanta Braves the best closing option in the NL East. The only way that might not be true is if Edwin Diaz finds whatever he lost on his plane ride from Seattle to Queens.

Who knows? Maybe the Atlanta Braves signed the 2020 relief pitcher of the year? That would be ideal.
