Looking at the 2020 depth

As things stand going into spring training, the Braves bench probably looks like this: Tyler Flowers, Adeiny Hechavarria, Johan Camargo, Nick Markakis, and Adam Duvall.

All of those players have starting experience and could likely start on a lot of other teams in baseball.

This is also me assuming Austin Riley wins the third base job out of spring training.

Whatever your qualms with Flowers, by metrics he’s an elite pitch-framer and is a solid back-up catcher.

Hechavarria did a great job of filling in for an injured Dansby Swanson last year and can play all over the infield.

We all know what Camargo is capable of, and the switch-hitter can play just about anywhere. Hopefully he’s had more time to think and adjust to being a utility player after struggling with it in 2019.

While I was the one screaming loudly that I didn’t want to go into 2020 with a DuKakis platoon in left field, I do understand that both of them are very good players who could start for a lot of teams. And they complement each other off the bench as a lefty and a righty option.

What you really want out of your bench is a bunch of players who can step in if a starter gets hurt and not cause a significant drop-off.

I certainly feel like the Braves have that this year with the bench they’ve put together.
