In the event Josh Donaldson signs with another team, Atlanta Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos will have to look for a third baseman. Would a New York Yankee be an option?
The Josh Donaldson waiting game continues for the Atlanta Braves, as well as other teams. So until he signs, many are left wondering who to turn to as an alternative.
Miguel Andujar had a huge offensive season for the New York Yankees in 2018, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award.
But surgery on his right shoulder last May ended his season and now leaves his future in question with the Bronx Bombers. The Yankees have Gio Urshela to man the hot corner as things currently stand.
Let’s take a look at the good that comes with Andujar, before we look at the bad.
Andujar hit 27 home runs with 92 RBI in 2018. He slashed .297/.328/.527 with an OPS plus of 130. As a right-handed power hitter, he would provide Freddie Freeman the protection he needs.
BUT…
Andujar was by far the worst defensive third basemen in baseball in 2018. According to Baseball Reference, he had a -2.2 Defensive WAR.
Fangraphs’ advanced stats were even worse. Andujar’s Defensive Runs Saved were -25, while his UZR was -16.
You can probably see down the road I am going with this. While the offensive numbers are really good, Anthopoulos values defense. So…
Andujar is not even arbitration-eligible yet. That happens in 2021, with free agency in 2024.
Baseball Trade Values has Andujar’s value at 27.2, which is surprisingly high considering how poor of a fielder he is.
Based on value, a trade would like this:
Let’s keep the verdict short and sweet: there does not seem to be a plausible way Andujar would fit with the Braves based on what they look for.
In fact, he appears to be well on his way to being a designated hitter. If he is available, this is an easy pass for the Braves on Andujar.
