In what would be a bombshell, reports state the Atlanta Braves have “checked in” with Anthony Rendon’s camp.
It may lead to nothing, but it’s still no doubt very interesting that the Atlanta Braves would even pick up the phone to call Scott Boras and discuss Anthony Rendon.
However, that’s exactly what has happened if you believe Jon Heyman.
That last part kind of covers all bases though. It sounds as if the Atlanta Braves didn’t really like what they heard on the other end of the line.
Still though, it’s a sign of a couple things for the Braves.
For starters, it seems the Atlanta Braves still might possibly have plenty of money to spend and will do so as long as it seems wise.
Everyone from the outset of free agency pegged Anthony Rendon to at least garner over $30M per year on his new deal. Surely the Braves wouldn’t have called hoping for something significantly less.
Secondly, it appears that the Braves, Alex Anthopoulous, and the rest of the front office are dead-set on indeed landing an impact bat to replace Josh Donaldson.
It’s no secret the Braves need a bat behind Freddie Freeman to protect him. Anthony Rendon would be a very logical choice for that.
The former National would be jumping ship if anything were to happen and obviously that would be a blow to the Washington Nationals to see their former star third baseman line up for their arguably biggest threat in the division.
While many expect Rendon to leave the nation’s capital, especially after the recent signing of Stephen Strasburg, I don’t think many had Atlanta on the radar as a destination
Ironically, if the signing were to be completed, it would sort of be a full circle move as it was the Braves who drafted Rendon in the 2008 draft before he decided to attend Rice University.
While it still seems like a long shot at best, it is no doubt interesting to see Atlanta linked to a big time free agent. We will see if anything else materializes.
