David O’Brien of The Athletic recently had a sit-down with Atlanta Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos to discuss a wide array of roster-related topics.
Thursday was an off-day for the Atlanta Braves, but it doesn’t mean that all things are idle. While the Braves are in the middle of a pennant race, questions have already begun in regards to how the offseason might shake out.
In an article posted to The Athletic Wednesday afternoon, David O’Brien was able to talk to Braves General Manager Alex Anthopoulos about topics that focused on the club now and what might happen this winter.
Due to the pay wall, I won’t be able to give any specific quotes, but there were some interesting views from Anthopoulos.
Alan touched on potential September call-ups a couple of days ago and Jake discussed how overused some of the regulars have been—two topics Anthopoulos talked in great detail about.
But he also was asked about Josh Donaldson’s future (and coming free agency) and the expectations of Austin Riley when he returns, plus where he fits in next year.
Anthopoulos also briefly talked about the trajectory of top prospects Cristian Pache and Drew Waters and what their timeline looks like to get to Atlanta.
Finally, O’Brien asked Anthopoulos about Julio Teheran’s team-option for next year and whether that is something the Braves are interested in picking up.
Like usual, Anthopoulos sounded candid with his responses, though he also carefully guarded the covert nature he and his front office conduct themselves in regards to players… so that means we have to make some educated guesses as to his meaning.
Let’s dive into each topic, with some analysis and opinion sprinkled in.
