The Atlanta Braves red hot offense was held in check on Tuesday evening by Jacob deGrom.

The Atlanta Braves have been on an absolute tear lately and have beaten down anyone in their path. Unfortunately, there was bound to be a rough game in there somewhere.

Jacob deGrom has always been a tough customer for the Atlanta Braves offense.

The Braves had no issue with deGrom back in April when they scored 3 runs and coaxed 4 walks against the 2018 Cy Young award winner.

However, that was not the case this time around as deGrom asserted his will against the Braves Tuesday night.

Jacob deGrom carries a 1.86 career ERA through 18 career games against the Atlanta Braves. So, it’s safe to say he was ready to match back up with the Braves in 2019.

deGrom finished 8.1 innings of work allowing just 2 earned runs on 5 hits. He also struck out 10 Braves batters while on the mound.

Unfortunately for Braves fans, Julio Teheran would not have the same luck. Teheran has pitched excellently in his last few starts but he ran into a few hiccups tonight.

Julio only made it through 4 innings allowing 6 earned runs, 8 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. He threw 83 pitches (52 of them strikes) and couldn’t seem to really find very much command.

I will say that some of his command issues were due to inconsistency from home plate umpire Manny Gonzalez but more on that later.

The Atlanta Braves did manage to score 2 runs against deGrom in the bottom of the 9th inning. Freddie Freeman and Josh Donaldson had back-to-back home runs to chase deGrom from the game.

However, it was too little too late as Mets reliever Robert Gsellman secured the final 2 outs and New York took game 2 of the series by a final score of 10-2.

Let’s talk about a couple of takeaways from Tuesday night’s loss.
