Atlanta Braves: Julio Teheran continues to dazzle in win over Marlins
The Atlanta Braves needed only one run to beat the Miami Marlins on Saturday and secure the series win.
Both sides were rather quiet on Saturday until the later innings, but the Atlanta Braves had zero hits until the sixth inning.
It was a pitcher’s day as Marlins’ Trevor Richards was teasing a no-no, while Braves’ Julio Teheran was having a good day as well.
After a huge win on Friday where the Braves offense had a 7-1 blowout win with 14 hits, they were quite the opposite on Saturday.
Atlanta got their first hit with two outs in the sixth from a Freddie Freeman single, and would get only three hits total on the day (other two hits were from Nick Markakis and Austin Riley).
Teheran went six innings, striking out five, and walking only one while allowing no runs. He’s a name that hasn’t been given enough credit lately and continued to prove it on Saturday.
Teheran now has 3.03 ERA on the season with a 4-4 record including a 0.70 ERA in his last seven starts.
The Atlanta Braves continued their success against the Marlins, now having a 7-1 record against the club.
Though they got their first hit in the sixth, they didn’t score the winning run until the next inning.
Riley started it off with a double before advancing to third on a deep sac-fly from Ozzie Albies. Tyler Flowers followed with his own sac-fly that drove Riley home, sliding across home plate.
That would be enough for the Braves as Anthony Swarzak, Sean Newcomb, and Luke Jackson would handle the last three innings to secure the win.
The Marlins threatened a couple of times, including the eighth.
After Swarzak got two outs, Newcomb entered to face Harold Ramirez but gave up a double. This forced for Jackson to come in and he allowed a walked to Garrett Cooper after Ramirez stole third.
With runners at the corner, Jackson got Brian Anderson to ground out on a difficult slow roller that Josh Donaldson made a game-saving play on.
Jackson came out again in the ninth for the save and got three strikeouts —though he did allow a one-out single to Martin Prado.
The Atlanta Braves will go for the sweep on Sunday behind Max Fried at 1:10 pm ET. The Marlins will send Pablo Lopez to the mound for them.
