Here we look at why the Ronald Acuna extension that was announced on Tuesday is a great deal for the Atlanta Braves.
With all of the extensions coming in throughout Major League Baseball, it’s really not much of a surprise that the Atlanta Braves gave one to Ronald Acuna.
However, I did see some Braves fans on Twitter yesterday not all that pleased with the Braves extending Acuna. The lone argument is that he hasn’t even played a full season in the big leagues yet.
And those people would not be wrong. It doesn’t make a ton of sense to give a 21-year-old $100 million after 400 Major League at-bats.
But there are other factors that go into this decision that we’ll look at a little bit later.
I think most would agree that Acuna is a special player, and even if doesn’t reach the ceiling that many are placing on him, at the very least he should be a very good major leaguer for a long time.
So even though we haven’t seen a ton from Acuna at the big league level, I think we’ve seen enough to know what his floor will be.
And even that level of play is worth the amount of money the Atlanta Braves will be paying him for the next eight seasons.
This deal guarantees that Acuna will be with the Atlanta Braves for at least seven more seasons. That’s buying out three of his free agent seasons, with team options to buy out two more.
Either way you want to look at it, this was a great deal for the Atlanta Braves.
