The Atlanta Braves pitching had a wild day, unable to find command leading to a franchise record of 14 walks allowed

Every pitcher that stepped onto the mound for the Atlanta Braves Saturday gave up at least one walk except Chad Sobotka who only faced a single batter. That included starter Julio Teheran, Sam Freeman, Touki Toussaint, Luke Jackson, Max Fried, and the returning Arodys Vizcaino; seven pitchers used in the game.

The original record (13 walks), was originally set by the Boston Braves Bees back in 1938 in Chicago.

Atlanta allowed more walks than hits, starting with Teheran who gave up six of them over four innings. With that, he gave up three hits and two runs. He managed to strike out seven but those walks proved deadly. Most of the Braves starters have mostly fixed their first inning problems, except Teheran.

With Saturday’s performance, Teheran has now tied his career high in season walks (73) from the 2013 season, and this regular season still has a little over 2 weeks to go.

The walks started in the first inning when Teheran walked Bryce Harper with two outs, he’d go on to walk Harper another time. Harper would have three on the day. Consecutive hits from Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto scored Harper to give the Nationals their first run.

Vizcaino gave up the record-setter in the 9th with two outs left, walking Adam Eaton on four straight balls.

Another thing that hurt the Braves were the steals, which the Nationals successfully did five times, three of those from Soto. Trea Turner originally had one also but was tagged out by Dansby Swanson when his foot slightly came off the base.

The Braves offense on-the-other-hand was nowhere to be found, they had only two hits the whole game and those came in the first TWO innings. The hits came from Acuna in the 1st and then Kurt Suzuki in the 2nd.

After beating Max Scherzer and the Nationals 10-5 on Friday, the Braves mostly grounded out and barely got any hits.

They also managed to get four walks themselves, but two of them were to Swanson and another from pinch-hitting Preston Tucker.

There were at-bats where the players put up a battle, seeing 6+ pitches but it ended in outs. Jeremy Hellickson, making the start for the Nationals, was doing well in his return from the DL before re-injuring his wrist again during an at-bat.

So he was out after three innings, but Jefry Rodriguez and Matt Grace continued to shut down the Braves.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 5-4, which lowers the Braves division lead to 6.5 and retaining the Braves ‘magic number’ at 9 still.

They will look to take the rubber game on Sunday when Sean Newcomb takes the mound against Tanner Roark at 1:35 PM ET.
