Atlanta Braves: off day

The Atlanta Braves kick off a big series with the Washington Nationals today with a doubleheader. The Nationals have been playing very well lately, winning 6 of their last 7.

So far this year, the Braves are 7-5 against the Nationals, outscoring them 52-44 in those games.

In the opener, Max Fried will pitch for the Braves, taking on Nationals rookie Jefry Rodriguez, who has pitched in 5 games, 3 of them starts, posting a 6.86 ERA over 19 2/3 innings, with a 12/17 BB/K ratio.

The nightcap is where the intrigue will be as lefty Sean Newcomb will square off with Nationals ace, and Cy Young front-runner Max Scherzer. Newk has had some struggles with the Nats this year, but the Braves have also gotten to Scherzer this year once, so they can do it!

More from Tomahawk Take

Danville 4, Burlington 2 – Burlington got the first two runs of the game, but that was all they’d get as the Braves came back and won the game. CJ Alexander went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI. Justin Smith had a triple, a walk, and a stolen base.

GCL Braves 5, GCL Pirates 1 – The Pirates struck first, scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning, but the Braves did the rest of the offensive work on the day, highlighted by a 4-run 8th inning. Lisandro Santos allowed a run over 4 innings, giving up 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 5. Bradey Welsh and Walner Polanco combined for 5 scoreless innings of relief. Ray Hernandez was the offensive star on the night, going 2-4 with a double, home run, and 2 RBI.

DSL Rays1 6, DSL Braves 4 – The Braves took a 4-3 lead into the top of the 9th but couldn’t close out the Rays1 squad. Deivi Estrada went 2-2 with a walk. Kimberling Encarnacion went 2-4. Brandol Mezquita stole a base.

Atlanta Braves history on this day

In 1991, the Braves lost Neon Deion Sanders to the NFL, as he practiced with the Falcons for the first time. He would return to play in a handful of games at the end of the season. In 1992, Deion would lead the league with 14 triples while playing just 97 games.

That’s it, that’s all for another brilliant day of being an Atlanta Braves fan! We’ll check back in tomorrow!!
