Atlanta Braves send Mike Foltynewicz to the DL: Activate Julio Teheran
News no Atlanta Braves fan wanted to hear; Mike Foltynewicz triceps tendonitis hasn’t improved. As a result, he’s been placed the 10-day disabled list.
Just 10 minutes ago MLBTR broke the news that Mike Foltynewicz switched places with Julio Teheran on the 10-day DL. The move is backdated to June 13th.
Those who watched the game Wednesday night remember Mike cruising through five innings then departing without any indication why.
Later Jeff wrote that the Braves called his removal precautionary. Mike and the manager agreed he’d likely make his next start. Now that won’t happen.
Mark Bowman Tweets that the Braves’ happy face masked some concern over the injury and plans existed to push his start to Friday. This move to the DL means his earliest possible start is Saturday, June 20.
Mike feels fine but. . .
In a follow-on Tweet, Mark Bowman indicated Mike felt good after a bullpen session but training staff suggested a few more days rest would help him heal.
The triceps tendon sits at the back of the upper arm inserts into the back of the elbow. Tendonitis arises when the tendon is overused or is subject to impact.
According to The Sports Injury Clinic, treatment initially consists of ice or cold therapy two or three times a day combined with ultrasound treatments and rest. Later heat or a compression sleeve may be worn to speed healing.
No pitch creates torque on an elbow like a high-velocity fastball. Considering how many of those Mike unload a game, preventative rest now seems a smart way to reduce the potential for serious injury later.
Atlanta Braves schedule eases the
impact
After the Atlanta Braves finish with the Padres tomorrow, they have an off-day Monday followed by two games in Toronto and another day off.
Barring other issues, that schedule allows starters to remain on normal rest. Sean Newcomb starts today followed by Julio tomorrow.
Mike Soroka climbs the bump on Tuesday Followed by Anibal Sanchez on Wednesday, Thursday’s off-day allows the Braves to decide who opens the Orioles series next Friday.
That’s a Wrap
Taking care of Mike’s arm now makes more sense than most pitcher DL stints I’ve seen (Hello Mets.) Mike says he’s fine and I’m sure he feels fine. Physios and doctors must rely on the MRI to give them a clear picture.

I’d be surprised if he comes off on time. I’d think he’ll get at least until the 25th. Whatever happens, well let you know here at the Take.
