Sean Newcomb and the Atlanta Braves took on Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets in game 2 of the weekend series.
The Atlanta Braves came into the game on Saturday leading the NL in multiple categories offensively. If you predicted this to happen, then congrats: you are way smarter than any analyst.
Their hot bats took on Thor and the first place Mets looking to gain some ground in the NL East in this pivotal matchup.
Sean Newcomb was decent Saturday night as he went 6 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 5 of the Mets hitters.
Unfortunately for Newcomb, his pitch count was ballooned to 105 due to his inability to control the strike zone while walking 3 through the 6 innings.
Here’s what Newk had to say after the start:
Ozzie Keeps on Rollin’
The biggest bright spot over the past couple of series for the Braves has been the outstanding play of Ozzie Albies.
This kid has been absolutely tremendous this year and continues to swing a hot bat, while also making gold-glove caliber plays on defense.
Albies got the scoring started early as he turned around a 99.6 mph fastball from Syndergaard and put it into the Braves’ bullpen deep in right-center field.
The heater from Syndergaard was the fastest pitch hit for a HR this season… by anybody.
We saw a glimpse of Ozzie’s ability to hit for power last season, but I think it’s safe to say that nobody expected him to have 6 HR’s in the first 19 games of the season.
Albies has shown that he should be capable of being a prolific leadoff hitter, if Snitker decides to go down that route. I personally feel like Albies should be hitting leadoff, but it seems unlikely that Snit will move Inciarte out of that spot.
Mets Pull Ahead in the 12th
The Braves were able to battle back from a 3-1 deficit and tie the game at 3-3 as Flaherty and Suzuki contributed RBI’s respectively.
The Braves had opportunities to make something happen from then on, but failed to pick up that big hit to shift the momentum in their favor.
Newly-recalled Josh Ravin was called upon to eat up innings and keep the game tied as the game went into extras.
The Mets finally broke through in the 12th after Ravin hit the pitcher Robert Gsellman, which allowed Yoenis Cespedes to drive him in with an RBI single. They tacked on another run as Asdrubal Cabrera doubled in Cespedes.
Well… kinda:
A heads-up play by Dansby erased Cabrera when he was a bit lazy after rounding second base. Unfortunately, the 2 runs had already scored.
Jeurys Familia came on in the bottom half of the inning and closed out the Braves to seal the victory for the Mets.
What’s Next
The two teams will match up for game three of this four game series as Jacob deGrom and Julio Teheran take the mound.
First pitch will be Saturday night at 7:10 EST at SunTrust Park.
