The Atlanta Braves announced on Sunday that they have decided to option Ryan Schimpf to AAA after going 0-for-30 this spring

The Atlanta Braves continued their roster cut by sending infielder Ryan Schimpf down to Triple-A on Sunday. The move was paired with reassigning outfielder Jaff Decker to minor league camp.

Schimpf was acquired back on March 5th from the Tampa Bay Rays, in a trade for a PTBNL/cash considerations. He was struggling with the Rays this spring as well before coming to Atlanta, and has yet to get a hit.

In the Rays camp, Schimpf was 0-for-14 with eigth strikeouts. With the Braves, the 29-year-old was 0-for-16 with 11 strikeouts, for a total of 19 K’s! He’s also committed two errors playing at 3rd base.

A former Toronto Blue Jays farm hand, drafted in 2009, Schimpf actually got in the majors through the San Diego Padres. With them, he became known as a power hitter with A LOT of strikeouts. In two seasons (2016 and 2017) with the Padres, Schimpf had 34 homers but with 175 strikeouts.

Last season, he hit 14 homers, which was more than any Braves besides Freddie Freeman, Kurt Suzuki and Matt Kemp. Freeman knocked out 28 home runs, while Suzuki and Kemp each hit 19 apiece.

However, Schimpf would then get traded to the Rays before being designated for assignment on March 3rd. Now he’s with the Braves and will start the season with Triple A Gwinnett.

As of right now, the players still in camp fighting for a 3rd base job is Johan Camargo (front-runner), Rio Ruiz and possibly even Charlie Culberson as the bench utility guy.
