Braves Camargo helps Aguilas take a 2-1 lead in DWL finals
The sound of the ball hitting a bat, the smell of freshly cut grass, the beer and hotdog combo…if you’re missing this so badly like myself, get your fix with the Dominican Winter League! Well, you should have.
Atlanta Braves utility-man/third baseman, Johan Camargo, has been playing with the Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican League pretty much all offseason. The DWL seems like it goes on forever, but it’s good baseball with talented MLB players playing there through these winter months.
The regular season of the DWL runs until December 31st. Then the extended playoffs begin. A round robin style play has the four top teams battle it out for 18 games. Then, the two top teams play in the finals…which is a best of NINE series!
Camargo batted .324 in the regular season for Aguilas, but seemed to struggle a bit during the playoffs. Then the finals came!
The 24-year-old’s batting average didn’t improve, but he came up with two clutch hits.
In game one, Camargo blasted a three-run homer to cap the victory for Aguilas. In game two, he hit another home run…this time a two-run shot to help Aguilas take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Here are some photos that Camargo has posted over the past few days from the victories.
In game three, after going 0-3 at the plate, Camargo was removed from the game. Not because of injury though, he was just getting some rest before flying back to Atlanta for FanFest. He had committed to FanFest prior to knowing that Aguilas would advance to the finals.
Braves’ are hosting FanFest today and Sunday at SunTrust Park.
In the finals, Camargo went 2-11 at the plate, but had those two big homers. For the playoffs, he had a batting average of .182.
Not exactly what we’d want out of our “starting” third baseman for the Atlanta Braves. I still have plenty of confidence in Camargo’s abilities to be a solid third baseman for the Braves in 2018.

My thoughts on the situation is, if we had a power hitting left fielder or right fielder, Camargo would be slotted into the third base job hands down. But because we don’t, folks are looking for ways to fill that slot with a power hitting player.
Bottom line, Freddie Freeman needs protection in the Braves lineup. Will Camargo be that guy? No, but he could be a fine average hitting, good defending option for the Braves in 2018.
