Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves sent starting pitcher Bartolo Colon to the mound on Wednesday night straight from the 10-day DL.  Colon had been dealing with a “sore back and a strained left oblique”…maybe it was more of a hey, sit down and try to figure this out…but in any case, Colon was back on the mound.

We’re all cheering for the guy, but it just doesn’t seem like he’s got his stuff this year.  The 44-year-old has started 13 games now for the Braves and has pitched well in maybe three or four of those games.  The others have been disasters.

Last night was no different than what we’ve seen recently out of Colon.  Actually, I was pumped up in the first inning after he picked up a few strikeouts with pitches that had lots of movement.  Then came that check swing/walk and a two-run double.  It was downhill from there.  Colon lasted just four innings, giving up eight hits, six runs, three walks and had two strikeouts.

That could have been the last time we see Colon on the mound for the Atlanta Braves.

Braves lose 7-4

Freddie Freeman takes BP for first time since wrist injury

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Atlanta Braves first baseman, excuse me, the third baseman is one step closer to returning to the ball field as he took batting practice on the field for the first time on Wednesday afternoon.  Freeman and the Braves are expecting the 27-year-old to begin his rehab assignment this Saturday with the Gwinnett Braves in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Today marks six weeks since he was hit by the pitch in the left wrist and had to have surgery.  When he returns to the Braves it will be seven weeks following this scary HBP.  He was originally planned to miss anywhere between 8 to 12 weeks…Freddie is a fast healer!

The Braves offense has been clicking recently and to add a bat like Freddie’s is going to be a tremendous boost to this team.  The Braves currently sit 9.5 games behind the Washington Nationals in the NL East, 8 games back from a Wild Card spot and three games back from being .500 for the 2017 season.

"Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is lurking. After fracturing his left wrist back on May 17, the Braves’ franchise cornerstone got back into the batting cage for the first time on Wednesday to face some live batting practice.Freeman is set to begin his rehab assignment this upcoming weekend. The Braves have hung around this year even in his absence, as they entered play on Wednesday with a 37-39 record. They are 8.5 games behind the Washington Nationals for first place in the National League East and 7.5 games behind the Colorado Rockies for the second Wild Card spot, with their best player now slated to return sometime in the near future."

Don’t look! Tyler Flowers’ swollen forearm is nasty

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Once Tyler Flowers was hit by the pitch on Wednesday evening, I started to sweat a little.  Flowers played it off like it was no big deal, but you could tell the second he got hit that he was favoring his arm…he was holding his arm straight down to the side and not moving it.  I thought to myself, Oh great…just getting Freddie Freeman back and now this.

When Flowers got to first base and the cameras picked up on his forearm, holy cow…it was a different story.  After the half inning was complete, the cameras followed Flowers into the dugout where trainers quickly attended to the veteran catcher.  You could see other players huddling around him to see this huge lump on his arm.

Luckily, the Braves have said that the swelling on his arm has gone down a lot just by using a compression wrap.  It’s likely Flowers will miss tonight’s game and maybe one more.

"Atlanta Braves catcher Tyler Flowers’ arm was hit by a pitch during Wednesday night’s 7-4 loss to the San Diego Padres and the welt that developed was unbelievable."
"With the bases loaded in the sixth inning, Flowers recorded a painful RBI when a pitch struck his left forearm.“The look kind of freaked me out, too,” Flowers told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “You hear stories about breaking your arm and it just being numb or something. But I was able to move it around OK. I think it looked a lot worse than it is. Not that it feels good, but it looked pretty grotesque.”"
