Atlanta Braves Place Julio Teheran on 15 Day DL

The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Julio Teheran on the 15-day disabled list today with a right lat strain.

Teheran left the game against Colorado on July 22nd after five innings after attempting to field a ground ball. Later we found that he had felt discomfort in his upper back after throwing a pitch in the previous inning.  Later we were told that the injury had been diagnosed as a lat strain.

After resting a couple of extra days he took the mound  again Saturday and once again gave the Braves five solid innings. When he was removed it was assumed it was simply precautionary and no injury was announced.

This afternoon Cash Ruth of MLB.com reported the Braves righty was headed to the DL leaving tomorrow’s start up in the air.

Staring to look thin?

In the last six days the Braves have lost three starters; Lucas Harrell traded. Matt Wisler optioned to Gwinnett and Teheran to the DL and Casey Kelly lest Saturday’s start for Gwinnett with an injury after throwing just one inning. On Sunday the Braves started Johnny Wholestaff beginning with Joel De La Cruz so the rotation was already tissue paper-thin.

"Still looks like it will be Whalen. Nothing official yet. Blair might be ready to take Teheran’s next turn. https://t.co/588BULAlyL— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) August 2, 2016"

The Braves acquired in their midseason deal with the Mets that also brought John Gant to Atlanta.  Whalen was a 12th round pick of the Mets in 2012. He had his ups and downs in the Mets system and after double knee surgery last year which put him on the shelf when he joined the Braves system, As a result  he struggled settling in last year as Ben wrote in his scouting report .  This year however Whalen seems to have turned the page.

More from Tomahawk Take

At Pearl Whalen made 18 starts throwing 101 1/3 innings with a 2.49 ERA, 1.224 WHIP striking out 8.3 and walking 3.3 per nine. That was good enough to earn him a promotion to Gwinnett.  With the G-Braves he made three starts throwing 18 2/3 innings with a 1.93 ERA and 1.018 WHIP so a big league debut isn’t an off the wall call.

Aaron Blair’s last three starts at Gwinnett produced a 2.25 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP so he looks ready to rejoin the big team. He pitched yesterday so Saturday’s start would be on regular rest.

That’s A Wrap

As the dog days of August begin the Braves have to hope there are no more rotation injuries as options are getting pretty thin.

Next: What's a Revocable Waiver and Why Do I care?

There are low-cost options available like Josh Collmenter DFA’d by the Diamondbacks a few days ago and others who have been cut recently. It wouldn’t surprise me to see someone off that list signed in order to protect minor league arms rapidly reaching the most innings thrown in their career.

Whatever happens we’ll let you know here at the Take.
