Hitter of the week: Dustin Peterson finished the week having had multiple hits in every game of the week, and he’s not just getting singles either for Mississippi. He hit .565/.600/.870 on the week with 5 runs scored, 5 doubles, a triple, 9 RBI, and a 2/1 BB/K. Peterson has shown elite defensive ability and his bat has shown that his pre-crash performance at Carolina last season was no fluke. I had him ranked at #8 in the Braves system in my midseason rankings.

Honorable mention: On the strength of two games, Alex Lee ends up in this slot, as he went .583/.643/1.500 on the week. Lee was a college first baseman with a big home run swing in college, and that power bat had taken time to show up in the majors. He put up 6 runs scored and RBI while powering 2 doubles and 3 home runs on the week. He’s currently splitting time at first in Danville with Ramon Osuna, who had a tremendous week on his own (.333/.400/.667).

Pitcher of the week: In the most visually impressive start I’ve watched this season, Patrick Weigel took a no hitter into the 7th inning and finished up with a line of 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing 3 hits and no walks, striking out 8. Weigel has been performing tremendously well this season, and I had him ranked as the #13 prospect in my midseason rankings.

Honorable mention: While he’s been on the bus from Atlanta to Gwinnett all season long, many have forgotten the skills that Casey Kelly possesses. He’s a very solid sinkerball pitcher with an ability to work as a great reliever or a back end starter. Over the week, Kelly made two starts, going 13 innings, allowing 3 runs on 13 hits and 3 walks, striking out 7 total batters between the two starts.

AAA Gwinnett Braves (46-56)

Thursday

Gwinnett scored in the top of the 9th to defeat Buffalo 3-2. Aaron Blair had a solid start, going 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3. Emilio Bonifacio had a double and two singles. Mel Rojas, Jr. had two singles, a walk, and a stolen base. Blake Lalli had two singles. Ronnier Mustelier had a single and a walk. Omar Infante had a double.

Friday

The Braves scored 6 in the top of the 9th to defeat Buffalo 7-1. Robert Whalen had a great start, going 7 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 2, leaving the game in the 8th in the bullpen’s hands, and watching them allow in the run to blow a shutout. Reid Brignac had two doubles and a single. Matt Lipka had a triple and a home run. Mel Rojas had a single, a walk, and a stolen base.

Saturday

Gwinnett once again scored in its last at-bat to secure the win 2-1 over Buffalo Saturday. Roberto Hernandez went 5 scoreless innings, allowing just 5 hits and no walks, striking out 2. Mel Rojas had two singles and a stolen base. George Kottaras and Michael McKenry each had a double and a walk.

Sunday

The Braves didn’t wait around this time, though they didn’t make it easy, winning 2-1 on Sunday. Casey Kelly had an excellent start, going 7 scoreless innings, allowing just 4 hits and two walks, striking out 4. Sean Kazmar had two singles. Michael McKenry had a single and a walk. Rio Ruiz had a double.

Carolina Mudcats (40-60)

Thursday

Carolina was shut out on Thursday. Enderson Franco went 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 1. Tanner Murphy had 2 singles.

Friday

Carolina split a double-header on Friday. In game one, Lynchburg scored early and often, defeating the Mudcats 15-1. Andrew Thurman couldn’t make it out of the second inning, allowing 8 runs over 1 2/3 innings on 4 hits and 4 walks, striking out just 1. Luis Valenzuela had two singles. Jose Fernandez had a single and a walk.

In game 2, Carolina was able to turn the tables somewhat, defeating Lynchburg by a score of 10-3. Raymar Navarro made the start and went 4 innings, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 6. Luis Valenzuela finished a home run short of the cycle, with a triple, double, and a single. Keith Curcio had three singles. Joseph Daris had a home run and a single. Braxton Davidson had a double and a single. Omar Obregon had two singles. Isaias Tejeda had a single and two walks. Jordan Edgerton had a double.

Saturday

Carolina was on the short end of a slug fest on Saturday, losing to Lynchburg 12-10. Matt Withrow made the start and suffered most of the damage, giving up 11 runs over 3 innings on 6 hits and 6 walks, striking out 4. Omar Obregon had three singles. Isaias Tejeda and Luis Valenzuela each had two doubles. Reed Harper had a triple and a single. Joseph Daris and Jordan Edgerton each had doubles.

Sunday

Lynchburg closed out the long weekend of games with a 5-2 win over Carolina. Caleb Beech had a solid start, but the offense let him down, as he went 6 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits and no walks, striking out 4. Isaias Tejeda and Sal Giardina each had two singles and a walk. Omar Obregon had a single and a walk.

Lexington defeated Rome 9-1. Touki Toussaint had one of the most interesting starts you’ll ever see, going 4 innings, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 3 hits and 4 walks, striking out 11. Tyler Neslony had a single and a walk.

Friday

Rome walked off with a win on Friday, defeating Lexington 3-2. Kolby Allard made the start, going 5 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 4. Jonathan Morales had two doubles and a single. Ray-Patrick Didder had two singles. Yeudi Grullon had a stolen base.

Saturday

Rome nearly saw the organization’s third no-hitter on Saturday, and may have seen the best-pitched game of the season by a Braves minor league starter, as they defeated West Virginia 10-0. Patrick Weigel made the start and went into the 7th inning with a no-hitter. His final line was 7 2/3 innings, 3 hits, no walks, and 8 strikeouts. Austin Riley had a big game with two doubles and a single. Carlos Castro had a double and two singles. Darien McLemore had two singles and a walk. Justin Ellison had a triple. Jonathan Morales had a double.

Sunday

West Virginia shut out Rome on Sunday 2-0. Ricardo Sanchez threw better than his stat line would indicate as he went 4 1/3 innings, allowing 2 unearned rounds on 6 hits and a walk, striking out 2. Austin Riley was the only Braves hitter on base twice with a single and a walk.

Danville walked off with a grand slam to defeat Pulaski 6-2. Cameron Stanton got the start and threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk, striking out 1. Ryan O’Malley hit the walk off winner, along with two singles and a walk. Brett Cumberland had a home run, a single, and two walks. Marcus Mooney and J.B. Moss each had a single and a walk. Isranel Wilson had a double.

Friday

Danville got beaten up pretty good by Princeton, losing 11-2. Joey Wentz was hit hard in his first start for Danville, going just 2 2/3 innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits and a walk, striking out 5. Jared James had four singles. Brett Cumberland had two doubles.

Saturday

Danville’s offense had a big day Saturday, defeating Princeton 9-3. Luis Mora had one of his best starts of the year, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits and no walks, striking out 6. Marcus Mooney had three singles and two walks. Ramon Osuna had three doubles. Ryan O’Malley had two doubles. Matt Gonzalez had a single, a walk, and a stolen base. Trey Keegan had a single and a walk.

The Braves scored first, but they couldn’t hold their lead, losing to the Blue Jays 3-2. Kyle Muller made an excellent start, going 3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and a single walk, striking out 3. No one was on base twice, but Sander Boeldak did have a double.

Friday

The Tigers West scored in each of the last three innings to defeat the Braves 3-2. Odalvi Javier went 3 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and a walk, striking out 5. Luis Mejia had two singles. Derian Cruz had a triple.

Saturday

The Braves offense overcame an early deficit to blow out the Tigers West on Saturday, 12-4. Shae Simmons made a rehab start with the GCL squad, going an inning, allowing a run on a hit, striking out 1. Randy Ventura had a double and two singles. Sander Boeldak had three singles. Derian Cruz had two doubles. Luis Mejia had a triple, a single, adn a walk. Alex Aquino had a double.
