Braves likely to be active at Trade Deadline

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: We’ve been discussing trade scenarios for the 2016 Atlanta Braves for quite some time and it will continue all the way up until the Trade Deadline.  The Braves have a couple trade pieces that contending teams could be interested in.  Obviously, the player that would bring the most in return would be Teheran, but other players could be traded if John Coppolella likes what he hears in the offer.  The Boston Red Sox traded for Drew Pomeranz yesterday, but are they satisfied with who they have in their rotation?  The next two weeks will be very interesting to see if anyone is desperate and wants to overpay for Teheran.

"Julio Teheran‘s name will be mentioned in many conversations leading up to the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline. The Braves will spend these next couple of weeks determining whether they can get a return significant enough to trade the affordable All-Star who could continue to strengthen the front of their rotation over each of the next four seasons.Braves general manager John Coppolella has said his days of simply attempting to compile top prospects via trades are complete. As he moves further along in the massive rebuilding process he has engineered, he is seeking players who can compete at the big league level this season or at least by the start of 2017.While Teheran will steal the headlines, the Braves may also have a chance to garner some value for Jeff Francoeur, veteran reliever Jim Johnson or closer Arodys Vizcaino. Given that Vizcaino’s stock has dropped recently, Atlanta may opt to hold onto him. As for Francoeur, the club loves his leadership and may not get a return that warrants trading him before the end of the season."

The Diamondbacks’ trade for Shelby Miller looks worse than anyone could’ve imagined

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Shelby Miller has been one of the worst pitchers in the MLB over the first months of the 2016 season.  He has a 7.14 ERA which is more than a run worse than any other pitcher in the majors with at least 14 starts.  The Diamondbacks are currently in last place in the NL West and are sitting 19 games behind the San Francisco Giants…and 14 games under .500 in 2016.  Miller will go down to Triple-A to work on his mechanics and try to get healthy.

"The most controversial trade of the MLB offseason was undoubtedly the Diamondbacks’ bold move with the Atlanta Braves to acquire Shelby Miller. In an utter and complete surprise, Arizona parted ways with 2015’s No. 1 overall pick Dansby Swanson, prized pitching prospect Aaron Blair and everyday outfielder Ender Inciarte for Miller. At the time, it looked like a steal for the Atlanta Braves, who had firmly committed themselves to a lengthy rebuilding process. Well, with the news that the Diamondbacks had optioned Miller to Triple-A Reno on Thursday, this trade looks worse than anyone could have imagined.Miller has been a disaster for the Diamondbacks through the first half of the season. He’s 2-9 with a 7.14 ERA, allowing 55 earned runs in just over 69 innings pitched. The D-backs front office led by Tony La Russa and Dave Stewart knew that trading for Miller was a risk, but they openly believed that Miller was in a bad situation in Atlanta with comically poor run support. That was true in a sense because Miller’s 2.30 runs of support was the least a starter had received since 1985. With the addition of Zack Greinke, Miller was thought to be the No. 2 starter the D-backs needed to take them to the next level — nobody is arguing that rationale."
