Braves Taken Down By Phillies, 5-1

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher, Mike Foltynewicz was on the mound for the second time since returning from his sore elbow DL stint.  The 24-year-old had a very impressive May for the Braves, but in his two starts since returning he still seems to be searching.  (His first start back was shorten because of rain)

Folty On The Bump

In the first inning, Foltynewicz started the game with a strikeout and even topped out his fastball at 99mph.  Then it got kinda ugly, but could have been a lot worse.

Peter Bourjos took an inside fastball deep to left field.  Cody Asche doubled to right-center and Cameron Rupp hit a ball that went to the warning track.  Folty only allowed one run in the 1st inning, but it’s another game where the Braves fell behind early.

After the inning, Foltynewicz and Tyler Flowers both complained a little to home plate umpire Jim Joyce about a few pitches.  A couple of those looked to be strikes, but Joyce called those pitches balls.

The long ball killed Folty as the night went on as Asche homered in the 4th inning and Maikel Franco and Tommy Joseph both hit a home run in the 6th inning.

His Folty’s second start back in Atlanta, he went 5.2 innings, gave up eight hits (four homers), five runs, one walk and had five strikeouts.

“Velocity was good in the beginning and I think he threw some good breaking balls,” Brian Snitker said after the game.  “But a ball park like this, you have to keep the ball down.  We saw that yesterday.  I’m glad he’s pitching again on Sunday before we head to the break.”

One hold your breathe moment came in the 3rd inning when recently appointed NL All-Star Odubel Herrera tried to beat out a dribbler to first base.  Folty got a late break on a play at first base and stepped on the bag a little awkwardly.  He could have really broken his ankle on this play, but luckily he didn’t.

Bats Had Holes

Phillies starter Zach Eflin completely shut the Braves offense down.  Eflin went a complete game giving up six hits, one run, zero walks and had six strikeouts.

“I thought he was really good,” Snit said about Eflin.  “I looked up in the 5th inning and I don’t think he had 60 pitches.  Just pounded the strike zone and had a good breaking ball.  He’s very aggressive and very impressive.”

The Braves lone run came in the 7th inning when Ender Inciarte got a hold of a 3-1 pitch and cranked it over the right field wall.  This was his first homer as a Brave.

Inciarte missed three games with a groin injury, but was back out there on Tuesday to help the Braves.  He made a couple tremendous plays in the outfield tracking down balls that should have been in the gap.

“It was great to have him back out there,” Snitker spoke on Ender after the game.  “We saw in the 1st or 2nd inning that he was okay.  It’s good to have him back out there.”

Atlanta totaled six hits on Tuesday with hot hitting Jace Peterson having two of the hits.
