Atlanta Braves Draft Day 3 – Part 3
Atlanta Braves Draft Day 3 – Part 3
This is the third installment and last installment about the Atlanta Braves late round draft choices.
Information is getting scarce and some will be playing soon so Ben can cast his gaze upon them and let us know what he sees.
Round 22: Alex Lee, 1B, L/R, Samford, Senior, 6’1″ 195lbs, 10/23/93
Lee (@Alex_Lee32) was the second Samford player chosen in the MLB Draft behind outfielder Heath Quinn who was taken Friday in the third round. An article on AL.com says that Lee was “two-time All-Southern Conference performer” and “was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week” on April 25.
Not much information about Lee. Here are his stats from college and a few games on the New England League from the Baseball Cube.

Lee’s numbers look good, let’s hope they translate to pro-ball.
Round 23: Griffin Benson, 1B, B/R, Aledo HS,6’5″ 210lbs, 09/28/97 The site
High school players are pretty tough to find deep scouting reports on but I did find a couple of short showcase videos. The site won’t let me embed the clip so click the link to take a look. one a batting practice clip and the other a fielding clip.
Next: 24 & 25
Round 24: Matt Hearn, CF, L/R, Mission Colorado. J2, 5’9″ 165lbs, 02/29/96
This is Hearn’s recruiting video from 2013. Warning, the music is annoying.
While the Braves listed him as a CF, in the video he’s taking infield and that – second base specifically – seems to be his preferred position.
For Mission College Hearn played but infield and outfield. His two year stats show him to be an on base guy with who has yet to hit a homer.

41 | 193 | 167 | 8 | 3 | 28 | 1 | 22 | 11 | .383 | .458 | .467 | .925 |
Hearn played in the Northwoods League the last two seasons; as a utility man for the Kelowna Falcons in 2015 and at second base hitting leadoff for the Kenosha Kingfish this season.
Season | PA | G | AB | R | H | 2B | RBI | BB | SO | SB | AVG | OBP | SLG | OPS | K/BB | RC |
2016 | 69 | 14 | 58 | 9 | 20 | 1 | 3 | 8 | 8 | 5 | .345 | .426 | .362 | .788 | 1.0 | 9.1 |
2015 | 95 | 33 | 79 | 18 | 26 | 2 | 8 | 11 | 11 | 11 | .329 | .430 | .380 | .810 | 1.0 | 12.3 |

He hasn’t hit a home run for in that league and the K/BB looks a little high for a bat without power but playing everyday and full time professional coaching will help with that.
In 2015 he stole 11 bases in 13 attempts but this season hes just 5 out of 9 so perhaps that isn’t his best tool.
Round 25: Ryan O’Malley, 3B, L/R, Sonoma St U, Senior, 6’2″ 205lbs, 02/02/94
The Sonoma website says “he was selected as the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Baseball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 25-31” going 7 for 12 (.583) with three doubles, three home runs, six RBI and six runs scored for a slugging percentage of 1.583 over that seven day period. Here’s his stats for this season at Sonoma.
Next: 26 & 27
Round 26: Alan Crowley (@crowdog5), C , R/R, Reedley Col, J2, 6’2″ 210lbs, 03/04/96
The only information I could find about Crowley comes from his coach who says he’s a good catch and throw guy who hit in the middle of his lineup.
Round 27: Corbin Clouse (@corbin018), LHP, L/L, Davenport University, Junior, 6’1″, 225, 06/26/95
According to LSJ.com Clouse was Grande Ledge HS player of the year in 2013 “10-1 and had 110 strikeouts in 61 innings” and giving up just 10 runs. The paper said it was even more unexpected because he had taken multiple years off from pitching before going back to the mound this year.”
Clouse was pretty good for Davenport his first two years.
The Season for Davenport Clouse threw 50 innings striking out 75, walking 25 and allowing just three doubles, one triple and one home run. That added up to a 1.62 ERA and a WHIP of 1.00; not bad.
That’s A Wrap
There’s just not much available on the late round guys, lots of sites claim to have information but their data is mostly height, weight and outdated information about days gone by.
That’s to say this is where I call a halt to digging and hope we can find out more once we get them signed. Jeff started a running count of signees which will I think be a lot more interesting. Ben will dig into them once they start playing and provide current data to chew on and I’ll try to find something more interesting to write about.
I watched the some of the Reds feed Wednesday night an they produced the revelation that it’s “common knowledge” the Braves will go after a really big bat like Bryce Harper once they move into Suntrust.
If that’s common knowledge outside of Atlanta it must be restricted to Cincinnati as I haven’t heard or seen any credible source even hint that the Braves would add a $40M a year player. Maybe I read the wrong reports or maybe they made it up, you decide.
