Atlanta Braves Come Back Late But Lose to Diamondbacks in Extras
Mike Foltynewicz had his best outing in 12 months but the Braves limp lineup was too big a load for the pitching to carry and the Braves lost 5-3 in eleven innings.
The First Seven
Mike Foltynewicz took the mound in Atlanta today hoping to shake off an awful start in New York and remind people what a fine arm he has, He succeeded on both counts cruising through four innings with no serious threats from the Diamondbacks.
In the bottom of the third Folty singled with one out and Nick Markakis followed with a single of his own. Ender Inciarter smoked a line drive that Diamondbacks third baseman Jake Lamb snared for the second out. D’Backs hurler Patrick Corbin walked Freddie Freeman to load the bases but Tyler Flowers lifted an easy fly to medium Right field to end the threat and the inning.
Leading off the fifth Brandon Drury took a 3-2 pitch into center for a single. After catcher Chris Herrman lined out to Nick Markakis in right field, Folty induced what should have been an inning ending a double play ground ball from Chris Owings but Erick Aybar juggled the ball and the Braves were only able to force Drury at second.
Pitcher Patrick Corbin followed that by hitting a 1-2 pitch into the right center field gap for a triple scoring Owings and giving the D’Back a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning Daniel Castro singled to center and Folty dropped a nice sacrifice bunt down to move him to second. Castro moved to third on an infield out by Markakis but was left standing there when Inciarte struck out.
Foltynewicz pitched an uneventful sixth inning and got the first two hitters in the seventh before allowing Arizona to take 2-0 lead on a home run by Herrmann.
On the day he went seven complete, throwing 101 pitches – 68 for strikes – while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits striking out 8 without giving up a walk.
