John Schuerholz stepping down as Atlanta Braves president

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: One of the highest-profiled sports executives, John Schuerholz, is stepping down as President of the Braves.  He became the team President in October of 2007 and joined the Braves as General Manager in October 1990.  Schuerholz will be inducted into the Braves Hall of Fame in August of 2016.  This sounds like a decision made by the 75-year-old and not a stand by the other front office members.  Of course he can’t stay away though…

"John Schuerholz, a 50-year veteran of baseball front offices, half of it in Atlanta, is stepping aside as president of the Atlanta Braves.Terry McGuirk, the Braves’ chairman and CEO, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an exclusive interview that Schuerholz, 75, will move into a new position as the team’s vice chairman. The position entails more of an advisory role.McGuirk said the changes mean Schuerholz is taking a “step back” from day-to-day duties, but will continue to provide “consultation and guidance,” serving as an adviser to Schiller and Plant on business issues and working with Braves president of baseball operations John Hart on player-personnel matters."

Bleacher Report

Shattered Dream

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Tommy Hanson, once the top prospect for the Atlanta Braves and as highest as fourth in the MLB, tragically left us too soon last November.  Scott Miller of the Bleacher Report tracked down a few of Hanson’s best friends including Kris Medlen, Hanson’s sister Shabrie, former coaches Bobby Cox and Fredi Gonzalez, and others to talk about the life of Tommy Hanson.  This great article is a must read.

"You got this. That’s what he always said. You got this. Like a fastball on the black, he would paint the corners with it to his big sister whenever she was down or worried or overwhelmed. Instantly, it made things better. You got this. Always, Tommy Hanson, all 6’6″, 240 pounds of him, was making others feel better. His big, loving and chaotic modern family, who flocked to his starts the way relatives crowd a newborn. His manager in Atlanta, Bobby Cox, when the big bear of a right-hander arrived as one of baseball’s top prospects in 2009. A tight circle of friends, who, four months after they lost him, still have trouble finishing sentences attempting to explain their thoughts. It was November 9, 2015, when Hanson died after being found unresponsive in an acquaintance’s basement. Officially, the cause was a drug overdose. He was 29."

Braves’ Julio Teheran: Named Opening Day starter Monday

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Braves announced this week that they will give the ball to Julio Teheran on Opening Day in 2016.  This will be the third year in a row that Teheran will take the mound on OD.  The last time the Braves had a pitchers with three consecutive starts on OD was Derek Lowe from 2009-2011.  Before that, Greg Maddux started four years in a row from 1993-1996.  In his two previous OD starts, Teheran has pitched well, picking up the victory last season.  He’s 1-1 in OD games with allowing three runs and had six strikeouts.  The Braves take on the Washington Nationals on Monday, April 4th.

"Teheran was named the Opening Day starter Monday, Kevin McAlpin of 680 The Fan reports. This comes as no surprise, as Teheran is easily the top arm in theBraves arsenal, especially with Shelby Miller out of the fold. He’ll be on the bump against the division-rival Nationals in his first assignment of the season."
