All right – you saw earlier today just how terrible we were at picking the finalists from the vantage(?) point of six months ago. Now it’s your turn. I want to know who you like to win the World Series, which begins Tuesday evening in the fountain-filled field known as Kauffman Stadium.
Will it be the pitching-loaded Mets? Will it be the more-experienced 2-time AL champ Royals?
Royals have the home field advantage. They came within a single of pushing Game 7 to extra innings last year. They lost only because Madison Bumgarner was pitching out of his mind. They’ve had big comebacks to take out the Astros while the Texas Governor was tweeting their victory. They knocked out the biggest hitters of the year in the Toronto Blue Jays. They are on a mission.
The Mets think they have Bumgarner x3 this season. They shut down the Cubs in their own form of Giant-killing. And if you want an NL superhero for 2015, it’s been Daniel Murphy. Their offense hasn’t been spectacular lately, but it’s done enough against a pretty stout set of pitching between the LA Dodgers and the Cubs – beating out teams that have had the last 2 Cy Young Award winners – regardless of whether Zack Greinke or Jake Arrieta ends up with the hardware this year.
Do you root for the Royals? For a several years, we ridiculed the Royals for taking Braves’ cast-offs. Of course one of those is named Kris Medlen this year. Now they get the last laugh.
Meanwhile, the Mets are in our own division. Does that mean we hate them more, or does their stable of arms earn a measure of your respect… never mind that Kelly Johnson and Juan Uribe are on their team.
My call? I’ve been going back and forth, but it’s time to declare. I think both teams will be able to get some good results, though I don’t really see more than one higher-scoring game for either team. If it wasn’t for the Royals’ ability to string hits together for a big inning – and their bullpen – I might think the Mets might take them out early. So while it sounds squishy, I call it Mets in 7 games.
So tell us what you think: the poll closes just before the first pitch is thrown tomorrow evening!
