Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Shelby Miller, Mike Foltynewicz Has Surgery

Atlanta Journal Constitution

Braves trying to extend a streak, Miller (still) trying to end one

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves continue to struggle when Shelby Miller is on the mound…well, it’s not just him.  Miller last victory came on May 17th!  That’s insane to think about considering how well he’s pitched at times.  On Monday, the Braves offense again didn’t show up.  They faced Mets’ starter Jonathon Niese and couldn’t get anything going.  They had only five hits and zero runs.

Braves lose 4-0

"He has far and away the worst run support for any major league starter, and during the 22-start drought that support has shrunk to a ridiculous 1.5 runs scored by the Braves per nine innings pitched by Miller, including one or no runs while he was in the game in 16 of 22 starts since his last win.Either way, Miller is running out of chances of ending this single-season franchise record winless drought, which has now lasted – are you ready for this? – more than four months. Repeat, more than four months. The man hasn’t won a game since beating the Marlins on May 17, the day he came within one out of throwing a no-hitter in Miami. There’s been nary a win since. He’s 0-14 with a 3.68 ERA in that span, the ERA having crept up a bit in recent starts after remaining below 2.50 for most of the season."

Mets made Monday night’s Atlanta Braves game a must-win, then won

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Braves came into Citi Field on Monday evening with a little momentum.  They won three straight games and swept a team for the first time since June…yes, the opposing team was the Philadelphia Phillies and they did only score six runs in three games, it’s still three victories.  It was nice to see the Braves win a few ball games now that we’re in late September and they sit at 60-91 in 2015.

"Decimated the night before by the Yankees and the psychic trauma of Matt Harvey’s truncated start, Terry Collins made no qualms about it — they needed to beat the Braves at Citi Field.Fortunately for the manager, they received a strong outing from Jon Niese and got back to winning again with a 4-0 victory. Afterward, Collins basically let out a sigh of relief.“We needed this one bad,” he said. “I’m not trying to hide anything. There are big wins. This was a big win for us. Kind of rights the ship a little bit. Especially after yesterday and all the things that are taking place…This is a game we needed to have and Jon gave it to us.”"

Braves pitcher Foltynewicz has rib removed to combat blood clots

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Foltynewicz was taken to the emergency room Friday because of swelling and redness in his arm.  The 23-year-old was a highly rated Braves prospect heading into 2015, but he had an up-and-down season in Atlanta.  This strange injury is surely something to not take lightly.  Read more about Foltynewicz injury in the report Fred posted a few days ago.

"Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz has had surgery to remove half a rib after being hospitalized because of blood clots in his right arm.The team says Foltynewicz is expected to be released from the hospital Thursday and will continue a treatment of blood thinners for at least six weeks.Foltynewicz had the front part of his first rib removed Monday in a procedure performed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.
