Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Braves Sweep Mets!

Baseball Reference

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note:  The Atlanta Braves swept the New York Mets this weekend at Turner Field with a 1-0 win on Sunday.  The Braves are now 35-35 in 2015 and sit two games back in the NL East divisional lead.  The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t help us out this weekend as they got swept by the Washington Nationals.  Great pitching performances by both Matt Harvey and Julio Teheran on Sunday.  Pinch hitter, Pedro Ciriaco was the star on the offense as he hit in Ryan Lavarnway in the 7th inning to score the only run of the day.  Lavarnway doubled and then Ciriaco singled to left field to score Lavarnway.

Calvary Day grad Ryan Lawlor ready to start career in Braves’ organization

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The University of Georgia’s former pitcher Ryan Lawlor has signed to play for the Atlanta Braves organization.  He was drafted in the 8th round by the Braves as the Braves went very heavy on pitching to rebuild their organization on what they did in the 90’s and early 2000’s.  President of Baseball Operations, John Hart, believes that pitching is a way to build an organization so that’s what they drafted in 2015.

"Savannah’s Ryan Lawlor, a Calvary Day graduate who went on to become a standout pitcher at Georgia, was picked in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves earlier this month. The past two weeks have been a whirlwind for the 6-foot-1, 185-pound southpaw. Lawlor is now in Orlando with the Braves organization preparing for a short season Rookie League in Danville, Virginia.Lawlor said he had a good idea he would be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft. But when the call came from the Braves, his favorite team growing up, it was hard to hide his excitement.“I was at my parents’ house (in Savannah) and when I saw my name come up, my heart dropped. I started yelling and jumping around,” Lawlor said. “Then I got a call from the Brave’s scout and he told me to enjoy the moment.” And that’s exactly what Lawlor did, as the family had friends over to celebrate the milestone in the 22-year-old’s life."

Young’s “Walk-off” Gives G-Braves 6-5 Win

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Gwinnett Braves are currently in last place in the International League South, but can you blame them?  With all the moves the Braves have done this year, the G-Braves aren’t having that bad of a season.  Yes, it’s Triple-A and most teams are moving up and down players, but for some reason I have a feeling the Braves are at the top of the list with transactions this season.

"Eric Young, Jr. hit a “walk-off” two-run single in the ninth inning Sunday, lifting the Gwinnett Braves (33-35) to a 6-5 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox (34-36) at Coolray Field. Gwinnett avoided a sweep of the three-game series with their eighth “walk-off” win this season.Young’s bouncer into right field was the only hit of the inning against Pawtucket reliever Pat Light (BS, 1; L, 0-1). The right-hander walked Cedric Hunter to open the bottom of the ninth, and Daniel Castromoved Hunter to second with a sacrifice bunt. Light then walked a pair of pinch hitters, Todd Cunningham and Christian Bethancourt, to load the bases and set the stage for Young’s heroics.Gwinnett matched their largest come-from-behind win of the year, rallying from a four-run, 5-1 deficit. Right-handed starter Alex White fell behind by that score with five runs over 4.0 innings of work, including a run in the first inning, three in the second and another in the fourth. He allowed six hits and walked five while striking out four."
