Braves Draft Update

We had another draft signing announced yesterday, leaving just 3 of the first 13 (10 rounds) unsigned.  Anthony Guardado, a high school quarterback and RHP that the Braves obviously think has some substantial sleeper potential.  He signs under-slot, as Jim Callis tells us:

(yes, that was a typo – Callis meant to say ‘HS’ (High School) rather than ‘HR’)

Here’s the updated Braves draft signees table:

[table id=29 /]

The other important number here is the amount of bonus pool money remaining that can be spent.  The Braves will not/cannot exceed their pool allocation of $10,684,100 by more than 5% ($534,205).  While they would be taxed 75% on that overage – should it come into play – they would lose future a draft pick if they exceed that 105% barrier.  Obviously a big penalty.

So here’s the remaining numbers of interest:

  • $2,842,400:  the value of their Round 1 slot
  • $1,974,700: the value of their Round 2 slot
  • $160,100: the value of their Round 9 slot
  • $4,977,200: the sum of the three numbers above
  • $661,605:  the amount of “wiggle room” above that $4.977 million now available before the draft-pick penalty would kick in.

It should be noted that if Atlanta signs any picks from Rounds 11+ to a bonus of more than $100K, than the amount over $100K will count against their pool monies.  That’s why this signing is a bit surprising for the Mets:

I haven’t bothered to check and see how the Mets are doing on their bonus pool, but that’s a fairly large hit.  Nonetheless, good for the player.

Hopefully the Braves will be able to get some movement on the new high school graduates next week, plus the College World Series will end next week and they’ll get a chance to talk with their pick from the Gators, who face yet another elimination game tonight vs. Virginia for the right to meet Vanderbilt in the finals.
