Gwinnett Braves (24-26)

Thursday

Thursday was a double-header for Gwinnett against Lehigh Valley. In the opener, Gwinnett won 3-0. Manny Banuelos had a solid start, going 5 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts. The Braves only scratched together three singles, but they did draw 6 walks on the game, including 2 for Eury Perez. Jose Peraza and Joe Benson each drew one walk and had a single. Adonis Garcia stole his 3rd base of the season.

In a “bullpen game” in the night-cap, the Braves got a good start from Kanekoa Texeira, going 4 innings while allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk while striking out 7, but they ended up losing 6-4 as the bullpen gave up 4 runs in the final two innings. No Braves hitter had multiple hits, but Barrett Kleinknecht had a double and Adonis Garcia clubbed his 2nd home run of the year.

Friday

Gwinnett shut out Columbus Friday for a 4-0 victory. Cody Martin looked great, allowing 1 hit and no walks over 5 innings, striking out 6. Sean Kazmar had a heck of a day, going 3-for-3 with a walk and a double. Jose Peraza had two hits, including a double. Joe Benson had two hits on the day as well.

Saturday

Gwinnett won a pitcher’s duel on Saturday 1-0 with an 8th inning run. Matt Wisler went 8 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. The Braves only pushed one run across, but they did have 6 hits and 6 walks on the game. Mycal Jones had 2 hits and stole his second base. Ryan Lavarnway was on base three times as the DH in his first appearance for Gwinnett with one hit and two walks. Eury Perez had a single and a walk and stole his 25th base on the year. Wil Nieves also had a single and a walk.

Sunday

Sunday’s game against Columbus was suspended after the top of the first inning and will be resumed at a later date.

Mississippi Braves (26-21)

Thursday

The M-Braves pulled off a win over Pensacola Thursday 4-2. Tyrell Jenkins picked up the win, going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks while striking out 5. The walks are certainly troubling, but he continually found his way out of jams in the game. Rio Ruiz had 2 hits on the day and Corban Joseph added a double. Mallex Smith was on base three times on the day with 2 walks and a single. He did also commit his 3rd error on the year, and he continues to struggle in center field.

Friday

Mississippi came out on top of a 1-0 pitcher’s duel on Friday over Pensacola. Jake Brigham went 8 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 5. Tyler Jones gave up a couple of hits, but he finished out the 9th to pick up his 3rd save. In a pitcher’s duel, not a single Brave had multiple hits or was even on base multiple times in the game, but they squeezed across a run in the bottom of the 8th to win the game, and that’s what matters.

Saturday

Saturday’s game against Pensacola was postponed due to rain.

Sunday

Sunday’s double-header against Pensacola was postponed due to rain and saturated field conditions.

Carolina Mudcats (23-24)

Thursday

Carolina continued their extended losing streak, dropping two games to Myrtle Beach on Thursday. In the first game, the Pelicans took the win 5-3. Yean Carlos Gil had a rough start, going 3 1/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out only one. Overall, the Mudcats pitching walked 8 batters on the day, so getting out with only 5 runs allowed seems a blessing. No Mudcat had more than one hit, though Sean Godfrey had a double and Levi Hyams had a triple on the day while Keith Curcio stole his 3rd base in Carolina. Joey Meneses did have a walk and a single on the day as well.

In the night-cap, Myrtle Beach doubled up Carolina, 6-3. Sean Furney got hit hard early, giving up 6 runs over 4 innings, allowing 8 hits and walking 4. The Mudcats offense did have a good day. Keith Curcio gathered two hits. Joseph Odom and Connor Lien each had a walk and a double on the day. Sal Giardina also had a double. The offense has been absent since the bus crash, so this was a pleasant showing as the Mudcats had 10 on base in the game.

Friday

Carolina FINALLY broke the losing streak on Friday, pulling off a win over Myrtle Beach 2-0 behind a tremendous pitching performance from independent league signee Seth Webster, who threw 7 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Keith Curcio scored both runs on a double and a walk. Levi Hyams had two walks on the day, and Connor Lien had his 4th stolen base.

Saturday

Carolina started a winning streak Saturday, getting their 2nd win in a row, defeating Wilmington 7-0. Andrew Waszak went 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing 5 hits and striking out 3. The offense knocked out 11 hits, and 6 of those hits went for extra bases. Joseph Odom led the way with 2 hits, including a home run and a double. Johan Camargo had 2 hits, including a double. Sal Giardina had two singles, and Keith Curcio had a double. Joey Terdoslavich had a double and a walk, and Carlos Franco had a walk with a single on the day. Jacob Schrader added his fifth home run of the season.

Sunday

Sunday was a double-header for Carolina against Wilmington. In the opener, the Mudcats stretched their winning streak to 3 with a 3-1 victory. Blair Walters got the win, going 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits and 2 walks, striking out 3. Connor Lien had two hits, including a double and a steal. Sean Godfrey had another two hits and his sixth steal of the season.

Game 2 of the day brought another win, the Mudcats 4th in a row! The Mudcats defeated Wilmington 7-0 to move within a game of .500. Andy Otero started the bullpen game, and he threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out one. Justin Jackson got the win with 3 perfect innings of relief, striking out 3. Sean Godfrey continued his excellent hitting, clubbing a double among his 3 hits. Sal Giardina had 2 hits and Joseph Odom had a double. Johan Camargo was on base each of his 3 trips to the plate with a single and two walks.

Rome Braves (24-26)

Thursday

Thursday’s game was suspended in the top of 1st to be resumed on Friday.

Friday

Rome had a nice day, picking up a win over first-place Hickory 7-3 on the resumed game from Thursday. Caleb Beech threw 7 strong innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7 Crawdads. Rome had 16 base runners on the day. Omar Obregon had 3 hits, including a triple and 2 stolen bases, bringing him over .300 on the season. Jordan Edgerton had 2 hits and a walk. Tanner Krietemeier had two hits, including a double. Connor Oliver had a double and a walk. Tanner Murphy had a double and Ozhaino Albies collected his 5th triple of the season.

Saturday

Rome split a double-header on the road against Hickory Saturday. All runs were scored in the fifth inning for both teams as Hickory won the opener 4-1. Chad Sobotka had 4 no-hit innings with two walks and a strikeout as he returns from injury, but Carlos Salazar gave up 4 runs, though only one was earned after an error by Bryan De La Rosa allowed 3 unearned runs to score. Joseph Daris had two singles and stole his 9th base of the year. Ozhaino Albies walked and singled in the Braves’ only run while also adding in his 20th steal of the year.

The R-Braves picked up the shutout in the late game, winning 5-0. Zach Quintana pitched well in the game, going 4 innings, only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out 3. Kyle Kinman picked up his 7th save of the year. The offense had a good game, picking up 10 hits and 7 walks. Braxton Davidson led the way with two hits and a walk, including a double. Ozhaino Albies had a double and a walk on the day. Jordan Edgerton and Joseph Daris each had 2 singles, and Tanner Murphy had a double.

Sunday

Rome had another excellent pitching duel on Sunday. The R-Braves were held scoreless for 8 innings, but they scratched across a run in the 9th inning to tie the game at 1, but did fall in 11 innings, 2-1. Max Povse had his longest start of the season, continuing to impress with 7 innings pitched with 1 run allowed on 3 hits while striking out 7. He was the third round pick of the Braves in 2014 out of UNC-Greensboro and has shown some tremendous stuff this year. With his 6’8 frame, tremendous moving fastball and slider, he’s got a future closer or frontline starter written all over him. I think he could force his way into Carolina quickly, depending on the status of Steve Janas, Andrew Thurman, and Lucas Sims, who haven’t returned to Carolina since the bus crash. Ozhaino Albies used his speed in the 9th inning to score the first run of the game. Albies also collected three hits on the day, including a double, to lead the offense.
