Atlanta Braves: Thursday Minor League Ag Report

Braves Minor League Ag Report: Rome Braves (13-18)

It took extra innings, but Rome started off its week with a win Monday night, beating Greensboro 7-6. Alec Grosser got the start, and he was solid, albeit not spectacular.  He went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. Kyle Kinman came in for the 9th to close it out, but defense hurt him, as he gave up 3 runs in the ninth, but only one was earned. He finished out the tenth, and Rome got the win in the bottom of the 10th. Jordan Edgerton led the Braves attack with 3 hits. Ozhaino Albies had two hits and two steals, bringing his season total to 13. Keith Curcio had two hits, as did Codey McElroy. Matt Tellor had two hits, both being extra base hits with a double and a grand slam home run. Wigberto Nevarez also had a double.

Rome saw an excellent start, but couldn’t get the win on Tuesday, falling to Greensboro 2-1. Sean Furney threw 7 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 3. Jordan Edgerton led the way on offense with three hits, including a double. Bryan De La Rosa had two hits, and Braxton Davidson had a double.

Rome had the day off Wednesday.

Braves Minor League Ag Report: Carolina Mudcats (19-12)

The Mudcats started a busy week off with a 3-1 win over Salem on Monday. Blair Walters started the game and threw 4 innings of scoreless baseball before giving in to the rest of the bullpen.  Mauricio Cabrera got the win with 3 innings of relief, allowing only one unearned run. Jose Briceno had 2 hits, including a double. Dustin Peterson and Jacob Schrader also collected 2 hits in the game. Carolina was busy on the bases, stealing three, with Levi Hyams, Dustin Peterson, and Sean Godfrey each stealing a base.

Carolina was cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday against Myrtle Beach due to the bus crash of the Carolina bus.  There were multiple players injured in the bus crash, some of whom may hit the DL, so be aware.  I believe Lucas Sims is the biggest name I’ve heard of the players hitting the DL.

Braves Minor League Ag Report: Mississippi Braves (17-15)

Mississippi had a very good week, but it started rough on Monday with a loss to Mobile 6-1. Jason Hursh started the game, and he went 5 2/3 innings, allowing 5 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2, once again struggling this season, a theme on the young season for Hursh. The M-Braves offense didn’t do much to help either, only getting 4 hits total as a team.  Only Mallex Smith was on base twice, getting a single and a walk along with a nice assist at third base defensively from center field.

Tuesday brought a Mississippi double-header against Mobile. In the first game, Tyrell Jenkins continued his improved pitching, throwing a complete game 7 innings, allowing one run on 7 hits, while striking out 4. The Braves offense did just enough to win 2-1, only collecting 5 hits on the game. Mallex Smith provided the run scoring in the game with a 3rd inning 2-run home run, his 2nd on the year, as part of his 2 hits on the day.

Game 2 was a bullpen game, started by swing man Ryan Weber and closed out by Ryan Kelly picking up his 8th save in another 2-1 win on the day. Jorge Reyes and Andrew Robinson joined with the two Ryans to combine for 7 innings of one-run baseball, allowing 3 hits and a walk while striking out 5. Corban Joseph was the only M-Brave to collect multiple hits, getting two hits after coming in as part of a double switch when Weber left the game. David Rohm hit a double.

The M-Braves took another ballgame from Mobile on Wednesday, defeating the BayBears 8-5, tagging Diamondbacks prospect Braden Shipley for 5 runs along the way. Jake Brigham started the game for Mississippi, going 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 11 hits while striking out 4. Two M-Braves collected three hits each as Chris O’Dowd continued to hit .400 after getting three hits in this game and Kyeong Kang had three hits, including a double. Matt Lipka had a double.

Braves Minor League Ag Report: Gwinnett Braves (16-17)

The Braves started off their week Monday with a 5-2 loss. Chien-Ming Wang had a similar start to his season, doing his typical (for this year) inning-eating albeit mediocre performance. He went 6 innings, and in six starts, Wang has only failed to complete the sixth inning in his first start. He did allow 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2. Mycal Jones had a big game for the Braves, getting on base three times with a double, triple, and a walk. Daniel Castro collected three hits. Jose Peraza had two hits and his 13th stolen base. Eury Perez stole his 17th base of the season.

Gwinnett made a solid effort in the 9th inning, but fell one run short Tuesday, losing 5-4. Sugar Ray Marimon had his worst appearance of the season, going 4 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2. Mycal Jones once again led the offense, clubbing a double and a home run. Braeden Schlehuber had 2 hits, including a double, and Adonis Garcia also had two hits. Jose Peraza stole his 14th base.

It took 10 innings, but Gwinnett secured their first win of the week against Syracuse 2-1 on Wednesday. Manny Banuelos had a solid start, but his control wasn’t sharp, which raised his pitch count much too quickly. He threw 5 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Manny even added a double on the offensive side and scored the first run of the game for Gwinnett. Jose Peraza had a triple. Eury Perez led the offense with 3 hits and his 18th stolen base on the season.

My area of the country was a national news highlight this weekend due to severe weather, and there are more storms coming likely this weekend to this area, so stay safe everyone! While the picture is from an MLB game, the forecast for many of the games this weekend could be very rainy, so just be aware that the weather could alter some schedules. I intend to take time to view Jason Hursh and Victor Mateo this weekend for exact opposites of recent results. I’ll have one of them written up for Monday for review, and possibly both of them early next week. Right now the Braves are having some new names show up in game leaders, like Mycal Jones, who will probably be getting more run in Gwinnett as Todd Cunningham heads to the majors and Gwinnett loses their best outfielder. This time of year is when early hot players start to get promotions.  Atlanta in general hasn’t promoted this quickly with most guys, but it could be interesting to see if the influx of talent into the system forces their hand a little bit.
