Reasons for Braves fans to avoid dumping on Dan:
- Great teammate; generally nice guy.
- Worked hard – no complaints, no excuses. Never stopped trying to work out of his ‘funk’, either.
- The motor-skill dysfunction he was diagnosed with was not of his own doing. It’s pretty well impossible to hit a baseball if your eyes have trouble tracking anything in motion… never mind recognize pitches. But the belief is that this was concussion-induced.
- It’s not his fault that no one associated with the Braves could successfully diagnose the problem.
- It’s not his fault that he was traded to the Braves and that Frank Wren offered him that 5 year/$62 million contract. Many were criticizing the deal at the time on general principles.
- He got his eyes lasik’d in an attempt to correct his vision – still while not knowing exactly what the problem was.
- Because he was a Brave… and it wasn’t like he left under his own terms.
