Atlanta Braves have ‘work cut out for them’ for Palm Beach County deal

JOE CAPOZZI / PALM BEACH POST

Palm Beach County is about to pull off a double-play — bringing the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros to West Palm Beach for spring training for the next 30 years.

But county leaders are not optimistic about their chances of pulling off a triple play —following up the Nationals-Astros deal with a new one luring the Atlanta Braves to what would be the county’s third spring training facility.

[ Ed. Note:  this is an excerpt of the story; the full version is behind a pay-wall.  The gyst is that while there have been recent reports of the Braves ‘scouting’ both Florida coasts for a new Spring Training facility, Palm Beach County (PBC) was one of those locations.

Last week, we relayed a report that some memories of the last Braves’ trip there – before Disney – may have ended unceremoniously for some.  But that aside, it may be difficult to get even “rich” PBC (wealthiest county in Florida) to commit even more sports money after doing so for both the Astros and Nationals in recent weeks.

The Braves’ current lease agreement at Disney expires after 2017, so that doesn’t leave a lot of time… particularly at the speed of local governments wary of large expenditures. ]
