Atlanta Braves: Minor League Ag Report
On the “farm” theme oft-used to describe a team’s minor league system, I intend to highlight where the crop/animal cycle is for our actual farmers, based on local upper midwest timing. Having grown up on a farm, I am quite familiar with the processes!
Minor League Ag Report: Rome Braves (2-4)
Not much to report on the Rome Braves since Monday as they played only one game due to their Wednesday game against Savannah being rained out and rescheduled to May 22nd. They open a series in Augusta against the Green Jackets of the San Francisco Giants’ system today. The Braves did win their one game between reports, with Max Povse going 5 innings strong in a rain-shortened 2-0 win.
Minor League Ag Report: Carolina Mudcats (4-2)
Carolina also dealt with rain issues, missing out on their Tuesday game against Wilmington, which was rescheduled to May 31st. They lost their one game they played since Monday’s report in spite of a strong start from Yean Carlos Gil, who went 6 1/3 innings, only allowing 1 earned run. Carlos Franco and Dustin Peterson provided extra base hits in that game. The Mudcats open a series with Salem today.
Minor League Ag Report: Mississippi Braves (2-3)
Mississippi only had one game scheduled after Monday, and it was cancelled yesterday due to rain with no make up date announced at this point. They will instead open their series with the Jackson Generals of the Seattle Mariners’ system today.
Minor League Ag Report: Gwinnett Braves (3-3)
Gwinnett’s Monday night game was not completed before the report was finished, and they didn’t actually lose a game to rain this week, so they’ve got the most to report today. The Braves split a two game series before dropping the first game of a five-game home set against the Charlotte Knights of the Chicago White Sox system. Monday’s game was a 5-4 win in 10 innings where the Braves posted 2 runs in the bottom of the 10th to pull out the win. Jose Peraza broke out of an early slump by getting on base 3 times in 5 plate appearances with 2 hits and a walk and stole a base, though he did commit two errors in the game as well. Eury Perez stole 3 bases, and Chien-Ming Wang gave the Braves 5 1/3 innings of solid pitching.
Tuesday was another extra-inning affair, though Norfolk won that one in 11 innings, 3-1. Mike Foltynewicz had 4 2/3 innings pitched with some control issues, issuing 4 walks. He did strike out 5, but his control concerns have been present both starts so far. Ian Thomas pitched very well in relief for 2 1/3 innings while John Cornely threw 3 innings of very solid relief.
Wednesday was the opening of the series against Charlotte, and the Braves fell 5-3 to the Knights. Manny Banuelos pitched a tremendous game, going 5 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. He left with a tie game, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it close enough for the offense to make up the difference. Eury Perez stole his fourth base of the season and Jose Peraza had a 2-5 effort at the plate.
That’s All, Folks!
Currently, farmers in this area are preparing themselves for planting season, and there are high hopes for the 2015 growth season. The rain is quite fitting this week among the minor league affiliates as every farmer desires early rains on his crops to help them grow. With today being one week into the 2015 minor league season, our hopes run equally high to see growth in many of our favorite prospects!
