The Next Round of Roster Cuts is Here

As Fred prepared us just this morning, the next round of cuts are indeed upon us, though we’re still in the process of thinning out the current minor leaguers from the herd.

This is not a list of players that were expected to reach the majors at this point.  In fact, most all of them impressed the coaches in one manner or another.  All got their feet wet against some stiffer competition and they generally held up well.

  • Jose Peraza – Peraza, however, had trouble getting into gear.  Some wanted the Braves to break camp with him as the starting second baseman.  That clearly won’t happen – nor should it – but he will begin the season at AAA Gwinnett… perhaps investigating a brand new position:  center field (he’s always been a SS/2B to this point).
  • Tyrell Jenkins with Eric Young, Jr. Photo Credit: Courtesy of @allintheballs #27OutsBaseball

Tyrell Jenkins – Definitely made a positive impression.  He was the “other pitcher” in the Jason Heyward/Shelby Miller trade and a former Top 3 Cardinals prospect.  He’s back from injury with aplomb.  Just 4 innings, giving up 2 earned runs, but K’d 3 with just 1 walk in 2 outings.  Will start in AA.  Could certainly finish the season at AAA, or perhaps with a cup of coffee.

  • Mauricio Cabrera – this flamethrower struggled a bit, but then again, he hasn’t thrown much over the past couple of years thanks to injury.  2 innings and 2 earned runs.  He K’d 1 and walked 2.  He will join the Carolina Mudcats in the hopes of getting a full season of work in.
  • Yean Carlos Gil – He will join Cabrera in the Carolina League.  Didn’t get a lot of mound time:  1 inning, 1 earned run.  Walked none and K’d 1.
  • Brady FeiglProbably the story of the spring so far.  Has come out of nowhere to throw almost 5 innings, giving up a single earned run while walking none and striking out 5 hitters against 5 hits.  Feigl is 24 and posted excellent numbers after 65 innings at Rome and Lynchburg last year, but this performance got serious attention.  He will at least end up at AA – maybe higher.
  • Jose Yepez – Just about anyone who can catch is brought into the major league camp to start the Spring.  Yenier Bello was cut last week – Yepez is essentially next in line, and will follow the pitchers above over to the minor league camp.
  • Now in Fred’s look at pending roster cuts, he was aiming for the more “interesting” decisions.  Those will still be made a bit further down the road, but this is all part of the process – the process of forming a team.  Nonetheless, it was good to see some of these players get a shot to test the waters with the big boys over the past couple of weeks.
