Morning Chop: Atlanta Braves News

Baseball Reference

Game one of the three game set against the Arizona Diamondbacks is in the books, and Atlanta came away the victor.  It wasn’t as pretty an outing by Julio Teheran as usual, but he got the job done.  Check out the box scores from last night, courtesy of Baseball Reference.

Craig Kimbrel became the Atlanta Braves’ all-time save leader last night, surpassing John Smoltz with 155 career saves.  He collected four out for the save.  I love you Craig, but you have a LONG way to go still before you begin to fill John Smoltz’ big cleats.  Check out the video, courtesy of MLB.

The Miami Herald picked up David O’Brien’s story (Atlanta Journal Constitution) on how Craig Kimbrel of the Atlanta Braves set the new saves record in last night’s win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Read David’s thoughts…

Kimbrel sets Braves record in saving 5-2 win over Diamondbacks

"PHOENIX — He did it while much of Braves Country slept, but Craig Kimbrel became the new Braves saves king late Friday on a night when Julio Teheran and Jason Heyward continued to sizzle in the desert.Kimbrel broke John Smoltz’s career saves record with a four-out save in a 5-2 series-opening win against the Diamondbacks at Chase Field, where Teheran pitched seven strong innings to win his fourth consecutive start and Heyward had three hits and two RBIs including a two-run homer. It was the 16th save of the season for Kimbrel and the 155th of his career, moving him ahead of Smoltz, a former Cy Young Award winner and still the only pitcher in major league history to collect at least 200 wins and 150 saves."

Call To The Pen

Travis Coverston of our sister site on the FanSided Network, Call To The Pen, shared his thoughts about how Tommy La Stella of the Atlanta Braves has really stepped up his already good game since being called up to take over for the struggling Dan Uggla.  I personally love La Stella’s comfort, confidence, and approach at the plate for such a young player.  He looks like a seasoned veteran with the bat already.  Read Travis’ thoughts…

Tommy La Stella stepping up for Atlanta Braves

"Tommy La Stella was called up to replace the struggling second basemen on the Atlanta Braves roster. Dan Uggla is hitting a dismal .175 with two home runs this year. For a power hitter, he has not produced at all and is lucky he has not been traded or released so far.Ramiro Pena was only hitting .200 in 75 at-bats. He had as many home runs as Uggla but was one out away from falling below the Mendoza line. Tyler Pastornickywas given a chance to show what he could do, but he also managed only a .200 batting average and didn’t provide any spark to the Atlanta offense."

azcentral

Returning to Arizona in no way gets in the head of Justin Upton.  Since finding a home with the Atlanta Braves, Arizona is just an afterthought.  Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports shares why…

Braves’ Justin Upton not impacted by Valley visits

"Despite an eight-year tenure with the Diamondbacks where he was promoted as the face of the franchise, nothing much stirs inside Braves outfielder Justin Upton when he returns to Arizona.Well, except the comfort he takes in being able to sleep in his own bed.‘It seems like normal business now,” the 26-year-old said. “Last year was a little bit different, obviously, the first time. But now it’s a stop on our schedule.’"
