Braves promote Freddy Garcia And Fans Wonder WHY? Photo Credit: Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports
The Braves today promoted veteran Freddy Garcia and announced he will wear number 50. Garcia has experience in the job Kevin McAlpin suggests below as well as of course a starter. Since the Braves acquired him from Baltimore for cash considerations (I genuinely hope it wasn’t more than a dollar) he’s made one appearance of 3.2 innings allowing eight (8) runs on seven (7) hits for an ERA of 19.64 (No that is not a typo) and a WHIP of 3.273. In 53 innings over 11 games with the Orioles he posted a 5.39 ERA and a 1.358 WHIP. For more on Garcia check out our initial post on his acquisition.
That’s A Wrap
Every year we seem to sign one of the lost hope players – remember Julio Lugo – whether as an act of charity or they were just rummaging around the used player store and found someone whose name they recognized I don’t have any idea. I really hope he’s there to empty the trash and mop up in the event something goes south. I think his number should be 99, the number of pitchers I’d use before him, I wouldn’t trust him to pitch batting practice. Paying him even the tiniest percentage of a major league wage is a waste of money. Worn out and below replacement level Garcia is done as a dependable arm and in the Braves pen he’s breathing air a really useful pitcher could be breathing.
