Zack Wheeler far from dominant, but Mets beat Braves for series split
Zack Wheeler continues to rack up wins despite pitching lines far less dominating than hard-luck ace Matt Harvey has posted this season.
Wheeler improved to 4-1 despite another up-and-down start Thursday, allowing four runs (three earned) over six innings as the Mets earned a four-game split with the first-place Braves with a 7-4 matinee win at Citi Field.

FREDI GONZALEZ
On replays showing he was right on triple that should’ve been ground-rule double
"I don’t think I needed a replay to know that I was right, but coming in here for the rest of the game (and seeing the replays) it was confirmed. I thought the ball that Uggla hit, the home run, was a tougher call than that one. But we couldn’t get out of that inning. That was a big inning for us. You still would’ve rather had second and third than a runner on third and a run scored. But it’s neither here or there now."
On what Wood gave up
"He didn’t get hit that hard. He gave up some singles to a bunch of right-handed hitters that hit left-handers pretty good. Satin and Turner and that group of guys. But he did OK. It’s a little different pitching to major league hitters than it is to Triple-A guys, and remember, this guy was in Double-A two months ago. I think overall it was a good experience for him, now keep going and learn from it."
ALEX WOOD
On his performance, giving up a bunch of singles, etc.
"Kind of one of those days. I felt like things were just kind of falling for them. I felt like I repeated (delivery) well. My pitch count got a little high. They took me deep into some counts. Really the biggest thing, the biggest difference was that third inning. I kind of pride myself on, so far in my career, not giving up the big inning with the crooked number.I’m used to getting out of those situations, second and third. And to give up that hit to Buck, a big knock for him, probably one of the two pitches I wish I had back. The first-pitch slider to him and the other one to Byrd, the changeup away that he hit to left field."
GERALD LAIRD
On Alex Wood
"He threw the ball fine. He just fell behind a few times, but I thought he made some pitches. Just got into trouble with some bloop hits. He made pitches and they just kind of found holes out there. The back-to-back innings where he kind of got in jams, it’s tough getting out of them two times in a row. They had some big hitters come up, and they had some big hitters find some holes."
Medlen thinks he found flaw in delivery
NEW YORK — When Kris Medlen pitches tonight against the Mets, in a start that some had speculated he wouldn’t make because he’d be replaced by rookie Alex Wood, there might be some extra things rattling around in that interesting mind of Medlen’s. But self-doubt won’t be one of them, he said.
“Obviously when you have some bad outings, it’s easier to learn from those, honestly,” said Medlen, who is 0-2 with a 9.64 ERA and .395 opponents’ average in his past two starts, with 17 hits, 10 earned runs and four walks allowed in 9-1/3 innings. “To figure out what your’e doing wrong and whatever else.
Jake Peavy Is Missing Link to Atlanta Braves’ World Series Dreams
… While thoughts are obviously with Hudson, the Braves organization is going to need to move forward on its quest to win World Series No. 4.
With Hudson gone, what was already an issue now becomes a necessity, as the Braves will need to look to find starting pitching to replace the production of the 8-7 Hudson.
Enter Jake Peavy….

At home, left-hander goes up against Cardinals ace Wainwright
The Braves suddenly have pitching woes.
Tim Hudson fractured his right ankle Wednesday, rookie Alex Wood was knocked around by the Mets on Thursday and the Braves aren’t looking like the team that ranks among the top four in the Majors with a 3.38 ERA this season.
Since the beginning of July, Atlanta has posted a 4.20 ERA, which ranks 22nd this month as of Thursday evening.
Braves Seek Rotation Upgrades; Pursuing Bud Norris
10:00pm: The Braves are among the teams that are actively pursuing Astros right-hander Bud Norris, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).
Norris, 28, has a 3.93 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 126 1/3 innings for the Astros this season. He carries a significant platoon split, as lefties have rocked him at a .306/.365/.494 clip. Despite his struggles against lefties, Norris has drawn interest from multiple teams, including the Red Sox, Pirates, Phillies, Rangers, Giants and Dodgers throughout the summer.
