Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

The Braves rank 15th in National League and 29th overall with 29 runs scored in the past 12 days. We’ve scored three runs or more just four times in that time and had to have extra innings to do that. So hot is relative.Jordan Schafer. Since his arrival a week ago Schafer has done what a leadoff man is supposed to do; get on base. He has a six game on base streak with seven hits and six walks a BA of .292, OBP of .433 and a BAbip of .318. He also has an RBI, has only struck out twice and was caught stealing twice though the umpire definitely missed the call Sunday against the Padres. His numbers are better than Nate McLouth’s since his little hot streak, he plays an aggressive centerfield, has a good arm and causes pitchers trouble when on the bases. All of which are superior to McLouth’s performance so far. if his level of play remains constant he poses a real problem for the GM when McLouth gets healthy. It will be interesting to see what their solution is.

Martin Prado. Prado has had a not very Prado like week.   In a turnabout from his season so far as described in a blog post by David O’Brien over at the AJC, Prado was hot on the road and cold at home. On the road trip while many stumbled he hit .308 and  walked once for an OBP of .357 and a BABip of .364. All of that resulted however in only one run scored and one RBI. Back at the Ted he hit only .220 with two walks and a BAbip of .176 but two 0f his three RBI came on the homer that put Jair Jurrjens in front  for good on Sunday.

Chipper Jones. While Chipper soldiers on with a gimpy right knee his numbers are sinking quickly. He hit only .118 with four walks giving him an OBP of .286 and a BAbip of .167.

Brian McCann. BMac is scorching the ball right now. He hit .588 with four walks, an OBP of .632 and he’s slugging 1.118; BAbip .615.  That all of that resulted in only five runs is an  indictment of those in front of and behind him.

Eric Hinske. Hinske had a rough week hitting only .150 (BAbip .133), walking once (OBP.190), homering once and driving n one other run.

Dan Uggla. It just gets worse for Uggla. He hit just .105 with an OBP of .143 and a BAbip of .133. He had one and only walked once.

Freddie Freeman. Freeman is warming up nicely. Last week he hit .300 and walked P once for an OBP of .364 and a BAbip of 385. He homered, scored three other runs and even stole a base, albeit part of a failed hit and run.

Alex Gonzales. Our shortstop/magician had an odd week hitting a soft .350 (BAbip .438) but didn’t walk, struck out 4 times, scored only one run and went without an RBI.

In limited play Brooks Conrad went two for five with a walk, a homer and two RBI. Diory Hernandez was one for two and after Joe Mather’s destruction of the Angels the prior week he put up goose eggs across the board this week.  That’s the life of a bench player. I personally think Mather deserves more playing time in to rest Hinske and give Mather enough at bats to see if the Anaheim flourish was something that might happen more often given the chance.

On the pitching side of things Jair Jurrjens, Jonny Venters and Scott Proctor were on the hot side, Cristhian Martinez was solid, Tim Hudson, Craig Kimbrel and Derek Lowe did their impressions of a yo-yo and Scott Linebrink and George Sherrill skated near the edge without trouble but mostly survived. Eric O’Flaherty was on the hot side as well until his back acted up and sidelined him for three days. He could return tonight if needed. The bullpen is however seriously overworked and only more runs from the lineup will correct that.
