As Bob pointed out in his post about Nate, signing players now is like shopping at the Second Chance Store. There are things there that might be useful if the price is right and the need exists. Yesterday for example I could really have used a snow shovel and my old hat with ear flaps while cleaning the driveway. I wouldn’t buy them new because I’d use them once every 4 or 5 years but for a couple of bucks I could put them in the closet and not consider it a waste of money. Coincidentally Jayson Stark tweeted his updates All Unemployed Team members and I saw a potential bargain or two in the stack or not ready to retire yet players listed.
The list is shrinking as today Feliz (signed) and Pettitte (retired) dropped off. Millwood wants 4.5 million – no really that’s what he says – so maybe he doesn’t understand the market right now. Jim Edmonds is going to see the doctor before deciding whether to retire. I love Jimmy Edmonds but the decision isn’t that hard; retire buddy. We don’t need a first baseman like Branyan nor do we need catching and Bengi Molina is probably retiring anyway, so those two are gone for my purposes. Before I tell you mine I want to hear yours. So folks, if you were doing the buying, are there any of these bench/part time players you think fit our needs well enough that you’d offer a minor league contract and an invite to camp?
Jayson Stark’s All unemployed team (edited for our purposes)
Bullpen: Chad Durbin, Manny Delcarmen, Mike Lincoln, Ron Mahay, Scot Shields, Elmer Dessens
Starters: Kevin Millwood, Jeremy Bonderman, John Maine, Daniel Cabrera .
Infield: David Eckstein, Orlando Cabrera
Outfield: Scott Podsednik, Gabe Gross
I didn’t include Jermaine Dye who should really retire or Troy Glaus who is staying with his family on purpose. This isn’t everyone of course so if there’s someone I missed that you really think we need, chime in. Tell us why you want to add these guys too; inquiring minds want to know.
